A truly nice "pop culture" list. The 1980's were truly a _VERY_ magical time for mainstream cinema, to be sure!👍🎥🎬

Crazy, the movies in the top 10 highest grossing movies of 1982 probably are not in most peoples memories. Besides like ET, and wrath of Khan, Rocky 3, most would’ve thought Tron, first blood, and fast times would’ve been in it.

There is a problem with these types of lists because they take the overall domestic ticket revenue recorded and assume it was made in the year of the movie was released. When in many cases it wasn't. These lists also ignore re-releases. For example, On Golden Pond was released in December 1981 (ie for Oscar consideration) but made almost all its money in 1982. It made $119 million in ticket sales domestically in 1982 if done correctly it be the number 3 grossing for the 1982 domestic box office. If you counted it as a top release for 1981, you be wrong as it only made $327,000 in 1981. Star Wars New Hope re-release in 1982 would have put it in the top 10. In fact, Officer and Gentleman should be farther down the list because it barely broke $100 million 1982. The rest of the domestic ticket revenue for that movie was made in 1983. In fact, Annie should be pushed out of the top 10 and Chariots of Fire should be the number 10 in domestic ticket revenue in 1982 thanks to its Oscar nominations and wins (released in Sep26, 1981 it barely registered with just $ 2 million for its 3-month run in 1981 vs almost $59 million in 1982). Unlike movies nowadays that are in theatres at most for about 2 months and make most of ticket sales the first few weeks, movies in 1980's and earlier were in theaters for many more months (6+ months would not be unusual) as that was the primary way they could be seen. VHS distribution didn't really start to take off until the late 80's and it would take well over a year before a movie made its way to tape/disc, longer for paid services and years before it be on general TV. Not like today where not a month after movie is released it makes its way to digital if not at the same time as a theater release.

I recently picked up the 40th anniversary E.T.
@sirwin7776Ай бұрын
I'm surprised Fast Times and Rambo didn't make the top 10. Would take those over most listed. If anyone is looking for an E.T. dvd I found one randomly at dollar general for 5 bucks when I went on a Gatorade run. Not sure how I never had that on dvd. I still have my childhood VHS but apparently never upgraded until 2025 LOL.
@lloydbridgessniffinglue29 күн бұрын
Agree 100% that Fast Times should have been there. Btw, honorable mention First Blood is the 1st Rambo movie.

Christmas vacation has to be one of my top Christmas movies too, So great from start to finish. I never got into Home alone, not entirely sure why, maybe it seemed a bit more of a young kids movie back then as in 1990 I was 19 years old, not sure but it is a classic, no denying that.

When I was a kid back in the 90's my parents (I mean Santa) gave me a Powerplay rod Hockey game and my family and friend's played the hell out of that game for many years until it unfortunately broke. About fifteen years ago my dad bought a Gamescraft Table Hockey game from Costco. My family unfortunately didn't play it much....except for my buddies and I. These day's that same table Hockey game belongs to me (my dad wanted to sell it for $100.00 so that he could buy a billiards table, I took up his offer without hesitation).
