The Shure m97xe is a great cartridge. I have two of them. I recently replaced the stylus with a vivid-line stylus from LP Gear. I think it sounds a little better than the original. LP Gear still has some old new stock m97xe and they sell for over $500.00.

It’s probably just Chinese quality control at a budget company. Test first with a cheap record. For cheap cartridges Audio-Technica seems to be the way to go. If the Japanese company is manufacturing in China I feel the Japanese wouldn’t put up with this and they’d make an angry visit to the factory.

@ScottGrammerАй бұрын
When the wood cabinet is used, they are the correct length. Units sold with just the metal bonnet and plastic feet had shorter screws.
@jackonthefarm5540Ай бұрын
@@ScottGrammer No. They sent screws that were too long even with the cabinet in place.
@ScottGrammerАй бұрын
@@jackonthefarm5540 That's odd. Some Marantz cabinets had a wooden riser on the bottom that took the place of the large plastic feet, while others had no riser and were intended to be used along with the original plastic feet. They may have accidentally included the screws meant for the plastic feet along with a cabinet that had the riser, which used shorter screws. But at least you have sound again!

@ScottGrammerАй бұрын
The unit had been improperly repaired in the past, and in the right channel power amp, a transistor had been replaced with one whose Vceo (maximum permissible voltage between collector and emitter) was too low, and that transistor failed. I replaced it with a proper device, then set the bias and DC offset in both power amp channels. I also repaired some spots where wires had been cut for easier disassembly and then rejoined with yellow wire nuts. The controls and switches were cleaned, the unit was burned in for a couple of hours, and all was well.

I had bought a 2235b on ebay for a very good price, won it by auction at the last minute. When it arrived I hooked it up to some sansui speakers and powered it up. This thing was getting very hot after a few minutes. Just placing my hand over the heat sync with the metal cover on was an indication to turn the thing off. Came on youtube and found this video. Bought some of the blue insulators. Now this 2235b barely gets warm. Incredible. When buying older gear in the future these blue insulators are a very important upgrade. Thanks for the video
@ScottGrammer2 ай бұрын
Glad you met with success! But... I wonder if something else was causing your overheating issue? If heat was boiling out of the vents on the cabinet, then that meant that heat from the transistors was making it into the heatsinks successfully, and being dissipated into the air. Changing the insulators won't change that. I suspect you had a bias problem, (the bias pots get dirty over time and the bias current can change dramatically), and you somehow moved them back to a position where they provided the proper bias? There are other reasons the amp might get too hot, but in any case, I'm glad you're enjoying your receiver now.

If a rodent has chewed your tinsel leads halfway from the cone to the speaker terminals, can I solder another piece of terminal wire from where it's cut to the terminals?
@ScottGrammer2 ай бұрын
You can, but it won't work. You need to use real tinsel wire, and run it from the terminals to as close to the cone as you can get, say, not more than half an inch away. Once you've soldered the new tinsel lead to the old near the cone, glue the soldered connection to the back of the cone with black speaker glue. Simplyspeakers.com sells a kit for doing this, their part number LWK-1, for $10. www.simplyspeakers.com/speaker-repair-lead-wire-kit-lwk-1.html

Doing that on long drives used to be a thing to stay awake. Being from So. Cal. my radio was set there and that's what I'd look for first. But I guess that's going to get harder as tuners go digital and AM radio becomes more disused. When I was part-time overnight at KVOY 1340AM(now KTPI) the engineer was working on the transmitter and ran it at the full 1K watts for about a minute or so. And about a week later we got a QSL card from New Zealand. An oops but a pretty cool at the same time.

Hi Scott, my Project Turntable in the Debut 3 (s Audiophile) no pre amp built in. Im guessing the same applies just there in a Different part of the turntable? Thanks again for the video. Im sure it would of helped endless amounts of people if they know this problem. 😊
@ScottGrammer3 ай бұрын
@grantbassett2048 perhaps but perhaps not. While it still has to power the motor, the power supply should not be directly connected to the audio outputs of the turntable if there is no preamp. I suspect you may have another problem, perhaps the wiring at the headshell. Or perhaps the cables for the audio.

There's also something to think about with certain Pioneers, like this one, the CT-F8282, CT-F9191, and a couple of others, is that the clutch pack often fails due to a crack in the nylon. There was a fellow who fixed them beautifully by making a precision brass bushing that he installed to re-seal the cracked area, but he has been ill and I don't think he's doing it anymore. The other option is to glue the crack, but that's not a great solution. Fortunately, this machine's clutch pack seems to be in fine shape. I have serviced two of this model recently, both of which had good clutches. But I would not buy one unless it was in good working order, transport-wise. A good alternative would be a CT-F900 or 950, which do not have the clutch problem. They have their own issues, though, in the form of the Fluoroscan display chip failing.

I've had multiple problem child 5AR4/GZ34 of Chinese (or early Russian) origin, myself. One pretty good solution is to use a 5V4GA (straight sided, not an old coke-bottle ST type) which will drop 15 volts more than a 5AR4. Not terrible, and you can buy NOS US made ones under $20. It would be nice to discover a huge stash of 5AR4/GZ34's. You could retire if you could find enough of them.

Great concise information on the rectifier circuit of this amp. Glad you mentioned the slow warmup of the high voltage and how it save the life of the tubes. Too many don't know this and just bypass the tube with solid state rectifiers. Some at least add a delay turn on circuit, but it's still snapping on at full voltage.

My 2235 is missing all 4 transistors. I'm restoring it, and have new pairs of MJ21193,94's I'm installing. I have new micas, and also the blue silicone insulators. I'm unsure of whether the M3 x16 bolts need to have nylon gaskets for insulation, or no gaskets like the manual drawing shows for "2008" It also says to use "B3x12" bolts , but a 12mm is barely long enough to catch a thread with no gaskets. Be nice if it came with them.

As for the length of the screws, that I cannot attest to. But as for the insulation of the screws, as I said in reply to your other comment, the transistor sockets usually have raised rims that fit into the holes in the heatsink, and they act as bushings to insulate the screws.
