Stetson cowboy hats are still good, made in Mexico. Their contemporary fedoras can not handle rain. If you want a classic fedora that can endure bad weather, get an Akubra. very stylish and tough as hell.
@MattDeckard Жыл бұрын
Akubra is a good hat, a bit rough in texture because of the heavy use of hare’s fur, but that’s what makes them tough. Much of the toughness of akubra comes from the use of stiffener which is okay as that’s a big part of why hats are stiffened. The premier stratoliner and the excellent quality open crown modern Stetsons can hold their own and stay pliable.
@JohnnyWrongo-b9l Жыл бұрын
Pretty well everyone uses some type of stiffener. Living in Canada I love the weather resistance of the Akubra. I am very disappointed in contemporary Stetson fedoras. It appears the quality has gone down and neither the Whippet or the Stratoliner can stand much rain before the brim gets wavy, even if you treat them properly If it were, all my research tells me it is a better made hat than any Stetson fedora. I plan to give myself a Selentino for Christmas but that will be strictly a dress up hat that will not see bad weather. Sadly, people will buy a Stetson fedora thinking it is as tough as a 40s version or a Stetson cowboy hat. It is not so tough any more. Rabbit fur is the most common felt in hats and many have nothing but rabbit fur in them. If you want the softness, the buttery feel, there is Borsalino and Selentino, or Hufvud if you want a real luxury finish beautiful hand made fedora@@MattDeckard
@JohnnyWrongo-b9l Жыл бұрын
Also, wearers tell me the finish will soften a bit before long. And these judgements are necessarily subjective. I experience no "rough texture" but I have never been able to touch and compare the Stylemaster with the Whippet or the Stratoliner. In the last couple of years I have learned that Stetson fedoras are not nearly as tough as their cowboy hats and a relatively light amount of rain can ruin the brim. Heavy rain can ruin it even if you know how to properly dry it. I do not want to wear a hat and carry an umbrella at the same time. I'm way too clumsy for that sort of thing. Living in a rainy place I must consider that when buying a hat.
@JohnnyWrongo-b9l Жыл бұрын
I almost bought a Whippet but decided to get an Akubra Stylemaster because Stetson fedoras are, to my mind, inconsistent in felt quality and their non cowboy hats are just too thin. Living in a rainy part of Canada, I decided that Stetson is just not up to the job. The Akubra looks fine and does its job very well without the brim going wonky with a little rain. I am getting another dress hat for Christmas and it will be a Selentino instead of a Stetson. Just because it says Stetson does not mean it is a good hat. The Whippet is a beauty but it won't look so good in a relatively short amount of time. No Stetson's for me. There are better choices for similar prices, such as the Selentino Queen.

I enjoy your videos about these Dodgers caps, Matt! I imagine you've seen and picked up the Ebbets Field Flannels 8-panel Brooklyn Dodgers cap released earlier this month. I'd love a review/comparison video on that and the New Era Heritage series caps from a few years ago. I'm still trying to track down the Brooklyn and LA retro crown versions of those since I missed out a few years back. Would also be cool to see a how-to on swapping out the top button (squachee?). Thanks!
