#### Sermon Category: Instructional Sermon This sermon fits the category of "Instructional Sermon," focusing on teaching believers how to live as "God's chosen ones" based on Colossians 3:12-14. The primary problem with this category is the potential to overemphasize moral imperatives (what Christians must do) without sufficient grounding in indicatives (what Christ has done), leading to either legalism or despair if listeners perceive their sanctification as a condition for God's love and forgiveness rather than a response to it. --- #### Analysis of Jesus as Subject Jesus is identified as the central figure in salvation, as the one whose death, resurrection, and ongoing intercession secure forgiveness for sinners. The sermon emphasizes Christ's atoning work and its transformative implications for the believer. Phrases like "Jesus who was born of a virgin, died an innocent death in your place," and "instead of the Father looking at you in judgment, He looks to Christ and instead gives you grace," place Jesus' redemptive work at the heart of the message. These statements are robust indicatives of the Gospel, highlighting what Christ has accomplished. --- #### Law and Gospel Distinction The sermon demonstrates a strong awareness of the distinction between Law and Gospel, yet the balance is uneven at times. The Gospel is rightly proclaimed as the foundation for Christian living, with the preacher emphasizing that believers are already "hidden with Christ" and that they are called to "put on" virtues as a response to what God has done. However, this foundation occasionally gets overshadowed by the imperatives to "live as God's chosen ones" and "forgive others," which are presented in ways that might subtly imply that the effectiveness of one's sanctification determines the authenticity of one's salvation. For example, the preacher states, "The question is: Do we reflect on the image of our creator and savior and respond in a way that gives him glory and honor?" While this question rightly challenges listeners to evaluate their lives, it risks placing the focus on their performance rather than fully resting in Christ's finished work as the basis for transformation. --- #### Semi-Pelagian Concerns The sermon avoids explicit Semi-Pelagian language but flirts with potential confusion. Semi-Pelagianism asserts that human effort cooperates with divine grace in initiating or sustaining salvation. While the preacher strongly affirms that forgiveness and salvation are entirely gifts of God, statements like "You must live in light of this" and "Forgiveness is hard but necessary" could imply that the believer's sanctification is a cooperative effort between human will and divine grace. 1. **Examples of Potential Semi-Pelagian Tendencies** - The repeated emphasis on "putting on" virtues could be misunderstood as human-driven effort if not sufficiently tied back to the empowering work of the Holy Spirit. - The statement, "Your life should demonstrate and be the proof that you love God," while true in principle, risks conflating sanctification (fruit of salvation) with justification (the basis of salvation). 2. **Impact on the Gospel Message** These tendencies may unintentionally lead listeners to focus on their own performance as a measure of their standing with God, rather than resting fully in Christ’s righteousness. This could result in feelings of inadequacy or, conversely, self-righteousness, depending on one's level of perceived success in sanctification. --- #### Strengths and Weaknesses in Law/Gospel Presentation **Strengths:** - The preacher clearly states that salvation is a gift of grace, rooted in the finished work of Christ, and that sanctification flows from this reality. - The Gospel is proclaimed as the basis for living a holy life, not as a reward for moral effort. - Christ’s substitutionary atonement and the believer’s union with Him are emphasized as transformative truths. **Weaknesses:** - The imperatives of Colossians 3 (e.g., "put on compassion, kindness, humility") are emphasized without consistently anchoring these commands in the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit or the ongoing work of Christ. - The sermon sometimes suggests that Christian virtues serve as evidence for salvation, potentially shifting the focus from what Christ has done to what believers must do. --- #### Evaluation of Christ-Centeredness The sermon effectively places Christ at the center of the believer's identity, emphasizing that the Christian life is a response to His grace and forgiveness. The preacher’s personal story about forgiving his father illustrates how the Gospel enables believers to extend grace to others. However, the focus on moral imperatives occasionally competes with the message of Christ's sufficiency, leaving room for potential confusion about the role of human effort in sanctification. --- #### Overall Scoring 1. **Textual Faithfulness (8/10):** The sermon faithfully expounds Colossians 3, connecting the imperatives to the indicative truth of union with Christ. However, more explicit context from the preceding verses could enhance understanding. 2. **Law/Gospel Distinction (7/10):** The Gospel is proclaimed, but the Law's severity and the Gospel's unconditional nature are sometimes blurred by an emphasis on the believer's responsibility. 3. **The Bondage of the Will (6/10):** While the sermon affirms that salvation is entirely a work of God, the emphasis on "putting on" virtues risks implying a synergistic view of sanctification. 4. **Christ-Centered Focus (7/10):** The sermon highlights Christ's role in salvation but could better integrate His ongoing work as the source of sanctification. 5. **Pastoral Application (7/10):** The sermon effectively challenges believers to live out their faith but could provide more comfort and assurance by focusing on Christ's sufficiency. 6. **Theological Integrity (7/10):** The sermon aligns with orthodox teaching but occasionally risks overemphasizing human responsibility in sanctification. **Final Score: 42/60 (B-)** The sermon presents a clear and faithful exposition of Colossians 3, emphasizing Christ's transformative work and calling believers to live as "God's chosen ones." However, the emphasis on imperatives sometimes detracts from the Gospel's centrality, leaving room for potential confusion about the believer's role in sanctification.

Yes, it's definitely a symbol that echoes throughout history...... the symbol of a medieval Roman torture device that harkens back to a time of human sacrifice. If you're religion uses that type of symbology, you should seriously consider rethinking your worldview!! *FACEPALM* You delusional religious nut bags never cease to shock & amaze!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Where can I find a church like yours/similar in between Salem and Woodburn areas of OR in English? Beautiful singing. :) seems like therr is a lot of gospel/bible study/reading in this church. Which is so important. I like that this church is not just 1 hour. It's so hard to find a strong Ameican biblical church.
