Hi Oliver, I have just commenced watch repair as a hobby…and I mean just…I have literally only disassembled one watch and commenced re-assembly. I have watched a number of your videos and thoroughly enjoy them and the advice you provide - and it is extra good to be receiving that advice from a fellow Australian. While I took a lot of photos during disassembly, I am still a little uncertain regarding some of the reassembly and would dearly love to find a technical sheet (or whatever the correct term is) for the movement to assist, but my rudimentary Googling isn’t getting the result. Are you able to advise where I should be looking? Not sure if it matters with respect to that answer, but I am working on a Guess quartz watch with specification reference W0040G3. Many thanks, Kip (Brisbane)

I bid and won a 1963 eBay PCG bare case as I've always wanted a vintage pointed crown guard 5513. Both the 5512 and 5513 were built with this crown guard feature from 1959 -1963. The 5513 was introduced in 1962 making it even more rare. I have most of the gen parts for the project and received the case today. Spent a few hours authenticating it and found a big tell only those who service Rolex's would notice. On the first year 1969 Date sub 1680 and later date subs there is a movement relief cut out direct opposite side of the crown at the 9:00. Rolex later added this to aid in movement removal for service. No 5513 (or 5512) plexi submariners ever had this relief but the one I received today does. It's going back to the seller which is a bumber. Really wanted this to work out. Typical of Vietnam rep cases and I must say minus a few other tells it's certainly convincing.

@@obrhorology thanks Olly. Which are the minimum oils you need. Removing and fitting crystals and which tools. How to get a stem if the caliber isn’t known or on Cousins says not available. Finding crowns that look close to original/period. How to know if you need to replace a mainspring. Often I don’t because it has the right shape but then I only get an amplitude of approx 250. If a spring is no longer available which other one to order in it’s place, ie different length or thickness? How much end play is bad and so needs a jewel pushing in. How to choose which jewel to push. Correcting beat error on vintage watches. Tightening up bearings on rotors. How to clean properly if you only have an ultrasonic machine. Which microscope you use. How to minimise neck ache. When you can use cheap Chinese tools and when Bergeon. Or microtec. How do you stay interested when you don’t get a good mix of interesting watches. Best chronograph for beginners. Which Chronos to stay away from if parts are not available. Hope some of these give you ideas for videos.

One "tip" to consider is to cut a 4cm cube of scrap hardwood, carefully drill 2 holes close to the centre of one face through it with a bench press. One at 5mm diameter and other at 6mm diameter (at least that houses my particular screwdrivers). Using these holes to hold the drivers vertically whilst applying light pressure to the ends helped me get a perfectly square blade tip!
@obrhorology Жыл бұрын
That's a nice tip. Sometimes it can be hard to square off the end. With enough practice it becomes easier and quicker over time. Any tool or jig to make your life easier is a good thing.

Where abouts are you based mate. Are you in Australia or overseas. Can certainly point you in some directions to buy tools and what not. If you want to start chronos the guy "No BS Watchmaker" has a course on the 7750 I believe. What are you short. I could probably get a tool list together for chronos. The only thing that makes life alot easier is a nice movement holder for the eta7750 apart from that there isn't too many speciality tools needed for that calibre. Olly

I suspect a piece of wet & dry doubled up and gripped between the tweezers then pulled along to remove burrs and flatten the inner edges will suffice if you don't have a diamond file? Thxs I enjoyed watching the video.
@obrhorology Жыл бұрын
Hey Pete, That would certainly work. What I would recomend doing though is doing one side at a time. If possible try and glue the wet and dry to something thing so that you can do each side of the tweezers individually. The main thing to look out for is any rounding of the edge, as long as it's nice and sharp on the edge then you should be right. Thanks Olly Hit me up if you have anymore questions mate
@peteturner8493 Жыл бұрын
@@obrhorology Hi Olly, Just one question how do microscopic scratches get intorduced onto parts assume these are pristine from the manufacturer (or are they) say on a high end watch, does the cleaning process introduce any for high end watches on parts such as the centre wheel? I appreciate these are cosmetic and do not effect the watch function.
@obrhorology Жыл бұрын
Good question, I could probably make a video about this. Basically watchmakers contribute a significant amount of the internal scratches. This is why it's important when handling parts to be really careful. You can limit any potential scratches through correct handling (how to pick up and hold parts) or by using wooden, plastic or brass tweezers. The second way this happens is in the cleaning machine if parts are moving around and touching each other. A lot of the higher end brands e.g greubal and forsey have special cleaning baskets to hold parts in place and stop them from moving around. Alternatively you can clean parts by hand but the issue can be that not all the old oil gets removed in the manual process. Thanks for your question. Let me know if you want me to elaborate. I could probably make a video on this. Olly
