Great video as always. Derik, have you heard of the book series The Seven Kennings by Kevin Hearne? It has hard magic but with a steep cost to the user when they go over their normal capacity. He puts a lot of thought into how the magic affects every aspect of the world and the stories include a lot of uncovering what magic can do. You may find it interesting at the very least.

The AP we've been playing since October 2019 is nearing its end. And I think none of us want it to end. We're extremely invested in our characters and the narrative we're playing through. There's so much to do and find out. And I can't imagine these characters not being part of my life anymore. I really hope when we finish the written AP we can just continue dealing with level 20 threats (or even Mythic) even of there's little to no mechanical character progression. Although I have brainstormed ways where we could continue gaining power.

I was watching for vigilante. I agree that in 2e this archetype is just garbage in mechanics, but in flavor, it's great. And I still hate Paizo for making vigilante an archetype, not a class. The class was just great in 1e, but it is literally not viable in campaigns with all sorts of dungeons and other things outside city's
@miber90004 күн бұрын
A lot of these mechanics are similar to ones I've been exploring, so it was a thought-provoking listen for me. Personally, I don't think it's a bad thing that the game may not be intrinsically linked to its setting. I see it as the game offering a base setting that you can choose to explore (which I imagine the full rulebook and adventures delve more deeply into), but the general theme of corruption is one that could easily be suited or adapted to many different settings or genres. Overall, a very interesting first look!

I believe the point of the A-D ratings is to be diegetic information. It's what your dossier would say, if an officer were to look at your file. They won't see a d12. The same for Blade Runner, since your character sheet is also sorta your personnel file.

Really important contextual note in 5e: it is disgustingly easy for spellcasters to get a higher AC than martials due to the combination of medium armour and shield proficiency and the Shield spell (which at most requires a single level dip in another casting class that won't delay your spell slot progression (and has a bunch of strong 1st level class features and spells) or a single feat). And their action economy with their concentration spells means they can often afford to take the Dodge action, and they have the spare feats to get superior saves. They're not quite as busted as 3e Wizards, but they're still very much the strongest class in the game and they still completely invalidate most martials.
@KnightsofLastCall6 күн бұрын
@@watcher314159 in general I think the ability for wizards to gain armor proficiency or to be able to cast just fine in armor.... Is a massive game issue
@watcher3141596 күн бұрын
@@KnightsofLastCall By itself it's really not that bad. It's specifically the ability to invalidate the defensive role martials are supposed to have, which is partially facilitated by easy access to armour proficiency (though, honestly, the ability to make disposable front lines with summoned creatures is often more impactful) that is a problem.

Important note about CoDzilla: Cleric and Druid were still only the 5th and 6th most powerful classes in the game, after the Artificer, Spell to Power Erudite, Archivist, and Wizard (... and ahead of 60 other lesser classes; they were undeniably top tier, but ultimately not *that* broken). What actually made them scary compared to those even stronger classes is how easy it was for them to break games accidentally. First off, they were extremely forgiving compared to Wizards because of their sturdiness and the flexibility of their spell preparations, and so required a lot less optimization to play them competently. Secondly, a lot of how they flexed their power was in ways that tread on the domain of the martials. Derek went over the Cleric's gish spells and the ways in which they were better Fighters than the Fighter while also buffing the rest of the party to ridiculous levels and providing utility magic, but Druids were somewhat similar in that they could Wildshape into a Fighter level combatant, and share self-only buffs with their Animal Companion that made the Animal Companion as strong as the Fighter (while making the Druid even stronger), and cast Summon Natures Ally spells to bring in squads of (collectively) Fighter level creatures, plus all their other utility magics. It's not even necessarily that this was the most efficient way to play (though it got pretty close), but the specific way the Cleric and Druid insulted martial players by invalidating their role in the party using extremely straightforward options was what caused real problems. And yes, Wizards had gish builds as well, but per point 1 they required a lot more effort to make work, and were even less optimal than other Wizard builds. In short, it wasn't just that they were strong, but it was their specific place within the meta that made them cause a lot of IRL strife.

Excellent breakdown of the game - and especially how easy it is to make calls on the fly. One of your closing comments though is actually what bothers me the most about the system that I otherwise love: the lack of preparation. While I've never been a GM who likes to over prepare, the utter lack of preparation makes it very hard for me to make memorable or recurring NPC interactions. I just don't have the chops to go into those fully cold.

I've never played the third edition, but this makes me want to play. I've always heard it isn't worth getting into because the rules are so tedious. However, your explanation about this is the bridge between the old strategic way of playing the game and the new era's tactical focus, which makes it very compelling.

I believe that I made this comment many times on the Runelords videos, but if you are going to go back to a longer AP style game you may want to look at the interactivity of The Dungeon Run. They figured out a model that allowed viewers, especially their Discord community to influence the game with small things like adv/disadv (they still use 5e), and larger things like steps towards force cards (that's what they call them) that are similar to the things you had on your wheels. You could also probably tie the "purchase" of these influences to they system you already use that your channel members build up and currently spend on merch and other things on your Discord.

Have you ever come across or coverd the "the dark eye RPG" ? I am from Germany and it's the biggest RPG here. It is very German so very detailed exact rules and they try to be more grounded and realistic which makes it cumbersome. It's more like a fantasy life simulator. But most importantly it is in its 5 edition and it has like a 1000 books by now. Novels too. Most detailed consistent world. No different settings at all. Just one world that is covered and advanced for many many years now. Would be fun to see it explored :)
