When the ictus is specified to fall on what 'feels' like a syncopated weak beat, e.g. in the Stabat Mater, how would you conduct this?

Funny that i ran across you Patrick when searching for vespers (Christopher Smith from olmc). I hope y'all have a good ski season this year, I'm taking a break this year.

Brilliant instructional videos on accompanying chant, Patrick. Sometimes you refer to a cadence in mode one as "Do - Re", so using the modern tonal system as your frame of reference, and other times you refer to the same cadence as "VII - I", using the modal home as the frame of reference. Out of interest, when you are playing from unannotated chant, from which of the two perspectives do you think?
@PatrickTorsellАй бұрын
I think in solfege in chant, since that's really its vernacular. The clef tells me where Do (or Fa) is, and I go from there. But I'm definitely thinking of solfege in terms of the particular chant mode, and not at all in a modern sense of "key."

Beautiful singing and playing, Patrick! What a treat! When I was at university, I used to sing for EF Vespers in the Birmingham Oratory choir (in the UK). It was the highlight of my week! Hearing your recording takes me straight back there. Thank you!

What are your registrations for reduction in sound for the last 3 measures of Elgar's "Nimrod from Enigma Variations"? Include also the increase in registration beginning in 4th measure near end of the piece. What sounds do you add incrementally and decrease incrementally? Even the class of sounds-strings, flue open and stopped, flutes, reeds, couplers, etc-would be helpful. I have Freisach and Hereford Cathedral on Hauptwerk VII. Home organ is DIY 4 manual, 32 note pedalboard, 2 expressions shoes+ crescendo shoe+ next stud. You helped me several years ago to begin pedalboard playing in street shoes (loafers). Thanks.

Wonderful organ, isn’t it? I think that’s my favorite case and console by Juget Sinclair so far. So much more great instruments will come, I’m sure.

Commenting several years late... but you are a very good teacher. Presently I accompany the ordinary chants and hymns as an amateur organist. I have the same attitude as you: ideally for occasional interludes and postludes I prefer to play something liturgically appropriate. I spend a great deal of time looking for pieces based off of our final hymn tune for a final postlude/meditation - and that is another matter completely, but simply improvising based off of the given propers is an excellent idea. Thanks for fleshing out your method. I'll look through your material for other videos, but I have to say once again: you sir are an excellent teacher. I encourage you to continue you making similar videos or even courses online.

Your improvisations are thrilling to the ears! Improve your lighting of the pedalboard. LED lighting is excellent and simple to install. 8 ft strip commercial grade from Home Depot is great. Do it!!!!!
