We want our Iron Lady of the Pacific back, in all her glory! ❤

Rudder is installed. 9 months ago this was a casting being baked in the ovens in the foundry today it gets added to the ship before the stern block is added and they install the props.

Just curious, why does the metal look rusted? It's underwater so obviously it doesn't really matter if it looks good, but does it not get any kind of protective coating or anything applied? I have no idea how shipbuilding works so I'd love if someone could explain that.
@blaydCAКүн бұрын
Once all the welding is done, they will prepare the surface for painting, then apply the appropriate marine coatings. You can weld painted metal, and if there is further welding needing to be done the burning paint fumes are poisonous

@blaydCA Interesting, thank you!

the rust is only very recent and very surface level. it would take years, even decades, left out in a wet environment for there to be any real deep structural rust damage. once it's installed it's easy enough to grind off and paint over.

It'll be grinded out in certain parts

@@nathanpalmer2391 My pleasure! Preparation for painting is sand blasting with "Black Beauty". Any grinding you might see, is to smooth down welding spatter. EVERY surface, nook and cranny is painted. Source: I was a former Shipyard Worker, General Dynamics -Quincy Shipbuilding Division - Fore River, Quincy Massachusetts.

The M53 CNC machinist and assembly trades, and lastly, but not least, the machine shop x36 crane operators and riggers excelled in the production of this item. I am proud of my former coworkers in the machine shop. Job well done.

She told us that groups can accomplish more than the sum of the individuals in them. What she didn't tell us, is that she and eight other black kids opened the doors to all high schools in the USA for all the black kids in the country. The Little Rock Nine did that in 1957 and have left their imprint on history. Three members of that group participated in the christening of this submarine: Carlotta Walls LaNier, Elizabeth Eckford, and Gloria Ray Karlmark. More power to them! 🇸🇪🇺🇸

They are, that’s why they moved CVN 80 up in the dock. So they can start 81 behind it
