Your discussion about "installation so you can learn" is really on point. Things like VSCode, local virtual environments, local dockers, cloud dockers, github dockers, all are so distracting for the learner and I think that if for example, we decided that beginning online learners need to install VSCode first with no teaching assistant looking over their shoulder - we lose 75% of the students. Increasingly for beginners, a 100% in-browser solution is the only way. My Python course and my C course use 100% in browser solutions. And once they move towards servers, I am going to start teaching Linux + VI. I have used Jedit, Sublime, TextWrangler, NotePad, Atom, Brackets, etc over the years - I get really tired of re-recording all my videos and re-editing all my handouts every two years when a popular free editor wakes up and realizes they can get rich by forcing their adopter base to pay.

This foundational skill-building ensures that students develop not only the ability to calculate but also to understand deeper mathematical concepts such as place value and the relationships between operations. Introducing calculators too early can risk children grasping the underlying principles of arithmetic. I get the feeling that in teaching programming with or without llm we would arrive to the very same conclusion.
