A most informative look at Arendt's work; thank you. I especially appreciate the clarification of the phrase, "banality of evil". As Professor Stonebridge points out, this phrase of Arendt's has often been misinterpreted to suggest that Eichmann was himself not actually evil. If I understand correctly, Arendt was suggesting rather that great evil would not always and obviously proclaim itself as such, and that a murderous well-functioning bureaucracy could, and does, appear banal at times.

Thank you, Ms Gordon-Reed for your work, and thank you BA for this video. I'm old enough to remember when Fawn Brody, wrote her biography on Jefferson;half the history community basically threw their collective heads back and howled, accusing Brody of dishonestly sensationalizing her work by giving credence to James Callender's accusations, and the gossip of the time. It's continually astounding how an intelligent, and otherwise outwardly compassionate person, could know the evil they chose to participate in and to continually perpetrate, and not ever find a way to extricate themselves, and their victims from the muck of the society in which they lived, and the dehumanizing business, customs, and beliefs." It continues to this day.

Could I ask Diarmaid what he thought of the BBC’s latest series wolf Hall with Mark Rylance playing the part of the Thomas Cromwell. Personally I thought it did not depict the actual man even though Mark made a great job of acting the part according to the writers

Many many years ago my English teacher told the class that Shakespeare addresses the Human Condition and that every plot line in literature and media ultimately has resonance in our lives I'm 70 and I read something of Shakespeare every day and I still marvel at the man's ability to study human nature and be relevant as well as present in our modern world

Overlying the banal evil of the human condition is the powerful evil of the sovereign rulers who create untold harm and suffering for countless, innocent lives. Under such a zeitgeist, benevolent acts of charitable kindness are miraculous and heroic.

Yes, but it's not new. It has been going on since existence began. Everything follows its own evolutionary path, sheepishly, occasionally evolving from fight or flight response over billions of years. What is worrying is the regress trend in human evolution, as witnessed, for example, in Afghanistan.

Very interesting discussion and I learnt a lot. I do question the comment that Apis is derived from Latin and mean without feet. The Latin for this is Apus, not Apis (the bee). May need checking. Thanks.

My humble opinion: I've always felt, in my DNA, that Leonardo would never have painted such a weak chin. From the moment I saw a representation of the painting I knew, for myself, that this is not a Leonardo.

I enjoyed this, thank you. I think the Mill itself is a primary character, somewhat like Maggie, an entity which 3 men fight over for the possession and control of. Viewed in this way The Mill on the Floss is an excellent title.

I'm puzzled. Why would Cromwell's household have the letters he has sent to others at the point of his arrest?
@RalphBrooker-gn9ivАй бұрын
I came to the same thought. Even if there were copies (no idea if that was possible or practical), the recipients would surely have kept the originals. Or so you’d think.

A lot of activity in Fred Astaire films (delightful as the dancing and singing are) is basically Fred stalking Ginger (or stand-in girl character) until he gets her. In one, he even moves into her apartment block without her initial knowledge. Creepy.

How did Cromwelll’s family “stay up all night destroying his sent letters”, when they had been sent? Did he keep copies of all his sent letters? Isn’t it more likely that the families of his recipients “stayed up all night” destroying the sent (ie, received) letters of Cromwell to distance themselves from a condemned man?
