It's amazing how many antennas you can build with a Lowes nearby. Very good old school improvising. Real ham stuff!

From one Wofford Brother in Christ and fellow Ham in Mississippi (K5OLV) to you in Arkansas, I enjoyed watching your yagi build. I wonder if we share a common relative somewhere back up the family tree. My relatives all hail from North Mississippi (Webster County), migrating over from Georgia and Alabama back in the 1800s.

What is the reason for using 10ga wire here? Power handling or its just a wire you had available ?
@johnwofford270812 күн бұрын
Power handling, I tried 18 AWG for the coil and it would not handle 100W, using 10 AWG handles power fine (500 W) which is all my amp will do. I use 16 AWG for the elements and 10 AWG for the coil

@@johnwofford2708 Thanks for the clarification. Is there a document online for this antenna with exact dimensions and measurements that one can start the build from ? Thanks.
@johnwofford270812 күн бұрын
Nothing online that I know of, it's my own design. I think I gave everything needed in the video except how to connect the fishing poles to the pvc boom. I used 3/4 pvc snap connectors, a 3/4 inch pvc pipe fits perfecting inside the fishing poles. I think I gave a little more info about this on my 17 meter mini yagi video

Do you think the loading coils helped with lowering the SWR? I’ve seen this same design for a 20m yagi and without the coils the SWR is about 1.3-1.5 at best. Do you use a choke at the feed point for your setup?
@johnwofford270812 күн бұрын
The choke is more at the middle, I have a full size 17 meter yagi (no choke) and the SWR is 1.0

PS: I’ve designed a 20M mono band Yagi using a similar pvc boom. It sagged more than I wanted, too. I inserted a very lightweight wooden dowel into the middle of the boom which cured that sag.

I am actually going to use a cross connector in the center, then go straight up from the boom with 3 feet of PVC pipe and run support cords from the top of that pipe to the ends on the boom

I dont know if is a bug, if is by design or if just that I cant figure it out but I am not able to save in to memory a split frequency and that kind of sucks from Yaesu. Got everything working as split but after save it it doesn't save the split feature neither the second VFO, only the primary VFO

When adjusting the Parametric EQ bandwidth. 1 is the widest range of frequencies you are manipulating and 10 is the narrowest, ( this is centered on the frequency you have selected). 0 is basically shutting off that parameter and any such adjustment. I suggest you change all your zero's to ones ! Do you also know that holding down the Mode and NB buttons on the top of the radio as you power on ( until the waterfall appears), this expands the transmit to 4K. You must also adjust that frequency expansion in TX BPF Select option in the menu. VE7KEG
@johnwofford2708Ай бұрын
I do not think that is correct, I could not find info in the manual on the 0 setting, the manual says that a lower setting widens the Q, so I listened to the signal and watched it on a scope and it appears 0 on the bandwidth is the widest range of frequencies for the Parametric EQ bandwidth.
@truthfilterforyoutube8218Ай бұрын
@@johnwofford2708 You are correct as I stated the lower number is a wider spectrum, However Zero is not a number or a level it is " Off"! Listen to your audio at level one....than listen at 0....the result is very clear. This will be most evident at 600 hz and lower, PS: I spent years as a live audio engineer doing concert sound.
@johnwofford2708Ай бұрын
I did just that, I set eq1 to off and the sound had a lot of bass. I then set eq1 to 200hz level -10 and bwth 0 and the sound had much less bass. I then set eq1 to 200hz level -10 and bwth of 10 and there was more bass than on bwth 0 proving that bwth 0 is the widest range of frequencies. Have you actually tried this and listened to your audio on the 710? If you send me your email I will be happy to email you the audio file.

I do have a question about mics, I have been testing cheap mics on the 710: What cheap mic (Cardioid dynamic) do you think is the best for communication?
@truthfilterforyoutube8218Ай бұрын
@@johnwofford2708 Having looked past the manual and the AI's response to the question....I must admit that in fact you are correct....Zero is a slightly higher Q than 1. Yaesu should update their manual and/or correct this entry in a firmware update.

Hello, modestly it seems to me that to understand the difference in audio quality between ICOM IC-7300 vs YAESU FT-710, it would be wise to take as a reference the ICOM IC-7400. Why? Personally, I believe that the manufacturer ICOM has made a huge mistake. ICOM focused primarily on a customer budget (sales price) of €1200 to produce its ICOM 7300. According to you, why today is the ICOM IC-7400 (25 years old) better in Rx than the YAESU FT-710 and ICOM IC-7300, and competes without complex with the FTDX10 at the Rx level ???🤔 Obviously, the design and the sales price of ICOM IC-7400 was well above ICOM IC-7300 (marketing date: 2015) Cordiales 73' Diki58

Hi John, thanks for your video collection on the RS-918. I'm a bit confused about the builds tho, do all the clones use the same Nazr builds or are there different builds for the RS-918 and 9xx versions? Also I've been playing with my new RS-918 on firmware 2.9.48 but I have no transmit on 160m 80m and 11m but it works on all other bands. I can't seem to get the touch screen to calibrate either, when I hold down the power button I get the calibration screen but see no touch screen calibration prompts. Can you offer any advice ?

One big short fall is the inability to edit a memory channel. You will notice in John's video that when he shows you how to scroll or move through your memory channels some have NB on then some have DNR on and AMP1 and so on. This is a trap. Before any memories are programmed make sure you have all these setting DNR, NB etc where you want them. The only way to fix all this up after is to delete the channel and start again.
