Fred and the other raccoons featured on our channel were not pets, but former rehabbed wild raccoons . None are pets.

We lost contact with one another over the years. Our last email I learned she was quite a busy teen. My guess is perhaps she went off to college and by now has graduated. I wish her the best of success in her endeavours. She was very talented as well as gifted.

Raccoons are typically avoidant by nature. However they can be aggressive when food is present since that’s a valuable resource.

Fred was friendly the very day he showed up at our doorstep. We suspected he was someone’s illegally kept pet they set free to his detriment. Quite often he smelled like he was bathed. His life unfortunately was short. We tried to “wild him up” to survive being a wild raccoon but he always lost battles against the other wild raccoon boars over the breeding season. We sure miss him!

@@WeeklyWhiskers Well whoever took care of him first was supposed to pay 💰 a legal permit and I live in Sylvania, OH so I don’t really see 👀 any in my area.

We rehabbed Pinky Boy. Typically wild raccoons should stay wary of people in order to avoid being harmed. There are some wild raccoons who have been habituated to people who feed them who will act semi-docile.

Well that’s excellent ⭐️😃❤️😄 to know and I’m very jealous that I don’t have one because I live in Sylvania, OH so I have no clue where to find any.

@@JonathanRhee-es5ex3rb9h wild raccoons are very good at maintaining a relatively row profile much of the year living in the suburbs and countryside including Sylvania, OH. They are somewhat more visible in larger cities throughout N. America. Your local county licensed wildlife rehabbers are a good resource to learn about the local wildlife foragers.

Raccoons are not only nocturnal, but crepuscular as well. They'll also adjust their schedules when food or particular resources are not available at night. This was the norm for our released rehabbed rescues like Pinky Boy.

They’ve been long associated with a carrier for rabies which is truly a terrifying and deadly virus. Additionally, they’re also seen as nuisance animals to farmers as well as urban habitats which become financially burdensome so the raccoons are vilified even further. Like with any wildlife, they can be appreciated yet it’s important to recognise the risks while co-existing with them.

Like all our rehabs, Fred never lived in a caged environment. All of our rescues had the option to stay or leave.
