The Moral of the Hawgood’s tale is that if you know that their is a Sandy Beach and you are the wheels man aboard a ship in a storm and the captain says to go back out, it’s Ok to disobey orders because following the captains orders could lead to your death.

The First Vessel to sink on the Great Lakes, The Le Griffon. Time Passed, more ships sank. Then there was the Gale of 1913, where 19 ships sank. More time passed, and more ships sank. There was then the Carl D. Bradley, sank on November 1958. Then the Cedarville, which sank in May of 1965 after a collision. Then the Daniel J. Morrell, which sank November of 1966. Finally, on November 10th, 1975, The Latest and Largest of the Lake Freighters to Sink, The Edmund Fitzgerald, also called the Mighty Fitz.

The Edward Y. Townsend didn’t want to be scrapped. It wanted to join the fate of its sister ship the Daniel J. Morrell, and so it did. You could say that it felt right for the Townsend to sink rather than to be scraped, because its sister ship sank, and so it felt that it was more worthy to be sunk then to be scraped.

On November 10th of 2025, it will be the 50 year anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. And I hope that on that day, every ship that passes near Whitefish Point and travels through Lake Superior will use their loud speakers to play this song in remembrance for those lost on the lakes.

In the end, we can agree that the Great Lake Freighters have a more Iconic design then regular ocean going Freighters. More iconic then the MV Topdalsfjord (which is the name of the ship that collided with the SS Cedarville.

Yeah, it’s crazy because I meet a ton of people who know of the Fitzgerald and it’s sinking but barely anyone about the Carl D Bradley and the Daniel J Morrell. It really is sad because if they know about the Edmund Fitzgerald then they should also have a bit of an idea why no freighter since that have sunk on the Great Lakes. That’s because the coast guard started doing even more thorough inspections, they didn’t want anything like the Bradley, Morrell, Fitzgerald, or any other ship’s sinking to affect so many people. Plus, there’s still the children of the men who died on the Bradley and all the others who never will see or know their dad anymore, not to mention the grandchildren who never will know their grandpa for for the shortest amount of time.
