Roadshow attractions did not have a live orchestra. Not in the sound era anyway. btw the first third of Spartacus was largely directed by Anthony Mann and Kubrick had little control over what he did direct. Spartacus didn't reflect his vision at all. He disliked the completed film.

This movie was absolutely stunning with the visuals. I also loved the world building and the depiction of the war between humans and A.I and how the A.I were used in the movie. The movie did get undercut for me when it came to the emotional impact because while I was invested in the world, I could never get as invested in the story or the characters. Still a solid flick though.

@Binge Movies : Diving into Pyun's films for the first time since I watched Dangerously Close last summer for the first time ever and love the dude so far. U made some valid points on Dangerously Close but it is a very unique teen exploitation film. Yes, its highly influenced by the MTV era with its music video quick cut editing that hinders the film greatly (the soundtrack is absolutely killer however. Sadly, only available on vinyl to this day) but U have to admit, it does look good and John Stockwell and the actress playing his girlfriend are pretty good with the little they have to work with.

The versions of the turtles in this movie were different from the ones I grew up with, but the core of the characters and what made them iconic was still there. Even Super Fly was a pretty good villain. Overall it was pretty endearing, and fun! So I had a good time with it. Great review

Loved this podcast! I always thought tim roths accent in RD was weird too but for some reason i always felt it heightened his performance. How exasperated he sounds

56:56 I saw this film as a child not long after it was released. I loved it then, and I love it now. While I could never claim that it’s a cinematic masterpiece, perhaps viewing it as a child allowed me to enjoy it without all of the cynical snootiness you seem to have been burdened with while watching it as an adult. No, it isn’t slick, or clever, and the animation can’t technically hold a candle to the over-produced, ultra-realistic animation of today, but it has the same kind of unassuming beauty that is typical to most vintage Rankin & Bass productions. It’s success is in it’s ability to remain a storybook even as it becomes something more, allowing us to actually watch and see what happens in between the still pictures on it’s pages. I It occurs to me that, ironically, your entire review of the film and my resulting reaction & comment to what you had to say is essentially the very embodiment of the message / warning at the heart of this movie. I guess Carolinus really did know what he was talking about.

Mike and Jay at RLM introduced myself, and many others to New York Ninja. I was really curious to know what happened to John Liu and the people who made the movie. Shame it sounds like we wont find out any time soon. The guys at Vinegar Syndrome did an amazing job with what they had to work with and props to them for producing such great packages to titles lost to time. Interview is interesting, and a shame we didnt have a round table video and not just a podcast.
