Let me be the next person to say, 4 years later, thanks so much for this great comparison. It's really well done and clarified so many things for me.

I’m could definitely hear the slight snappiness and tightness over the fuller mahogany. They both sound good, and edge eachother out at various points depending on what you’re playing. Great job!

Nice. How do you like it
@actuallysilentrob257011 ай бұрын
I think it's the best single cut guitar in it's price range. I love the neck carve and that it is satin finished. I like that it has locking tuners and the pickups are pretty good. The neck heel joint is superior to the conventional design and makes upper fret access effortless. I like the headstock shape and design.

I was thinking either this one or the PRS Mcarty. Plenty of the Mcarty guitars at the music stores around here for me to play but the sire I would have to order blind from Sweetwater. Thanks for the info

Mediocre? Well, that keeps me in the toilet. Don't try and nail it perfectly anyway. Give it your own swing and be you!
MFD sound muddy in comparison. Lack top end sparkle

It’s all personal preference, but I have the asat classic s alnico, 2 legacys, and 1 s500. I do not like the mfd pickups at all. I actually bought alnicos from G&L and converted the s500 into a legacy

Nice demo. Both sound great. I need a tele with the classic tele sounds . Can I get that with MFD’s?
@actuallysilentrob25702 жыл бұрын
MFDs can get close to classic tele sound, but not exact match. That said, they can do things the alnico pickups can't. I kept the MFD model.

MFDs utterly destroy alnicos. People like the trad thing though. I don't get it.

If I had only one pickup to work with I’d choose MFD because it’s more versatile. Alnico’s do have that unique high end chime to them that I love so much though. Hard to pick!

First off, let me complement you on your playing. You’ve got some good versatility and skill. Now, do have a point of order to make. The vid title is misleading. Different neck wood. Different fingerboard wood. They also have maple veneers, but to be fair they both have those so that wouldn’t affect the comparison. The neck and fingerboard woods would.
@actuallysilentrob25702 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment. If you have a Carvin that has the right combo of neck, fingerboard, and body woods-- please send it and I will do a proper comparison.

Thank you for a really illustrative comparison. Not fancy, maybe, but one of clearest and most effective demonstrations I've seen. I also appreciate your modesty, but bear in mind there are plenty of us working to get as good as you are.

Digging MFD on leads but the I prefer the ASAT pu’s for the rhythm I have found that with thr MFD pu’s you need to roll of volume more to vary the sound. Nice jams! Thanks great video

You don’t “need” to. That’s your preference. Or just by a Fender or ASAT with alnicos.

You may have not hit every single note on Sultans of Swing but you did capture the drive and the spirit. Congrats. With respect to G&L alnicos vs MFDs, I have Legacy with the alnicos and also an ASAT with the MFDs. I prefer the MFD sounds because they are fatter with a lot more voicing available, especially if you tweek the individual poles ( a crazy good option with MFDs). But, in this particular demo you made the alnicos sing and showed the benefit of having both available to get just the right sound for a particular song. Again great playing!

Thanks for an excellent video. Apart from a few and short moments where the Core seemed to be slightly fuller sounding, I couldn´t detect audible differences. Still this is YTube and even with headphones, details may not be perceptible. What is your evaluation? By the way your playing is fine, keep on rocking.....
@actuallysilentrob25703 жыл бұрын
Fit and finish is far superior on the core, better tuning stability, more detailed body carve, full figured top vs SE veneer, quarter sawn vs flat sawn, likely more durable fret material, etc.. What I dislike most about the SE is the cheap feeling tuners. I'd agree that the core pickups sound fuller overall, but not sure that they are that much better for the $3K difference in price.. That said, I was surprised how good the SE sounded and played. I think the SE line has improved over the years, but they are also more expensive than they used to be. This SE would be perfect for gigging a small bar where I'd worry about a $4K guitar getting knocked over or spilled beer on by a drunk.

Some years ago I ordered a Steinberger and after waiting several months finally gave up (after receiving a Steinberger case from a different supplier which won't fit any other guitar and which I still have), so screw Steinberger. (You're a great player, though, "Actually".)

I have a Fender Strat with Alnico's and just bought an ASAT Classic Tribute w MFDs. The Strat is definitely brighter while the ASAT is darker and definitely louder. The Strat sounds a bit thin sometimes to me. Great playing man! I'm interested in which one of those is your fav?
@actuallysilentrob25703 жыл бұрын
I sold the alnico model and kept the MFDs. I like both, but the MFDs can do things the alnicos can't do.

Thank you Rob - I'm a big G&L fan and have always bought the Legacy over the S500, but what's your preference? I'm considering an ASAT currently, but I suppose you can't really go wrong with either! I hope to see more of your videos in the future.
@actuallysilentrob25705 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I also have a Legacy and an S-500, I'll do a comparison of those sometime in the near future. It's hard to say which I prefer. The S-500 is a little more versatile, just like the ASAT with MFDs is more versatile. The MFD pickups in the ASAT are not the same as those in the S-500 (except for the middle pickup in the Classic S model). MFDs in both are a little more beefy/warmer than their alnico counterparts. I like both, though.
@SO-bp2uc4 жыл бұрын
Actually Silent Rob I only have the S500 but I've had other strats before and I fully agree with your assessment. I find that the S500 can get very close to a traditional single coil by partially rolling off the bass and by using a compressor with the attack dialed in fully.
