I have been a Pentax user for many years, 16 plus years ago i purchased my first DSLR, a Pentax K100D Super. Since then I have added a host of other Pentax cameras, my favorites are the Kp, k3 series, the K3 MKIII being my favorite one and the mack daddy, K1 MKII. It is a beast of a camera and as i got involved in event photography became my go to camera along with the k3 series. I photographed events with earlier Pentax cameras but with the k1 and a K3 as my second body i had more confidence in my camera and started doing more events. The k1 is an unusual camera and as a landscape camera and for events was a pleasure to use.

I checked 5D Mk IV recently and I consider it worse as DSLR then K-1 Mk II (which I also checked) so I suppose 5D Mk III will not be better. As digital camera 5D series has it pros and cons, Canon sensors are very nice (Pentax is using Sony), I think AF-C is better (AF-S on Pentax is spectacular), Pentax is kinda behind the line with AF tracking software, but normal AF is great. There is bigger choice of modern lenses for Canon, Pentax can use old film era lenses, also autofocusin ones, but modern lens lineup, made for DSLR is kinda disappointing. There are great lenses, but there are not many. As Camera, DSLR camera, K-1 Mk II is hard to beat. I think only Nikon D850 is better and even then there is space to argue about image quality. But in the end truth is that any DSLR from last 10 or so years will work great, unless you shot action. Then there is Nikon and not much else :)

No worries, Luigi, I liked that bit of politics and I agree on #1 Worst😉The "Tax Freedom Day 2024" was June 28th in Poland - do you know, what that means? On the other hand, my best spent money (not invested, I'm not proffessional) would be couple of decent prime lenses and recently ordering more prints. Step by step I should make some albums too (again, after some years). Nothing serious, family pictures and some hobbyist cityscapes - but they mean so much more when put on photographic paper 🙂

If you look for learncamerarepair on google or facebook you can find a lot of information and repair manuals. Not easy to do a diagnosis at distance... but my suggestion, if you have familiarity with repair or you want to learn, is to start from the bottom plate. I hope this was useful.

There are a lot of people right now starting with film. They never used it and want to just give it a try to see if they like it or not. A lot of them are young with not much money, let say they have a budget of some $100 bills. In that case the cheapest camera is perfect because they can buy film and develop it. A roll of Black and White developed at home has a price around $10. For each $100 bill saved on the camera is 360 photographs taken. If they like it after 20-30 rolls they can invest in a better camera. If they don't they can resell the camera at the same value and had an experience and lesson learned. BTW, the camera I bought fo 2.5 euros, for a beginner, has the same results as a $600 Pentax LX or a $3000 Leica. If you are learning to drive and your goal is to do the first 200 miles of your life, a used Fiat 500 has the same value as a Lamborghini. Except for the pussy magnet... that is all another value :D

@LuigiBarbano
@LuigiBarbano 2 ай бұрын
Grazie a te.

Good topic. This is a good topic for people who wish to try film photography for the first time who are currently using digital cameras. I've been shooting since 1972 and my first SLR was the Pentax Spotmatic F. It is a wonderful camera. It is simple to use. The lenses for it are fantastic, can't go wrong. I would think the K-Mount is much better than the screw mount. Keep that in mind. I started out with the 50, 35 and 135. And really, that was all I needed. I shot mostly Tri-X, and did the developing of the film and eventually making prints. This is a good background for all those who think they know everything about photography. Once they get into film, they will realize they don't know much. This will give this a good grasp of photography and how it all started.

@LuigiBarbano
@LuigiBarbano 2 ай бұрын
exposure meters measure a light intensity, they are indifferent to colors. It's not easy at the beginning to get used to forget colors ant thing only in term of light intensity. In digital the problem is any camera interpret a little different the ISO and sometime underexpose a little to keep the highlights in control. I noticed my Fuji X-Pro 2 at 200 ISO is actually an 100 ISO if I use an external meter. Let say there is some flexibility in the ISO definition for digital and sometime manufacturers play with it. Any film, has a certain speed with a developer. The best practice is to try and find the true speed of the film with the developer you use most and then learn to meter properly. Pulling or over exposing in combination with reduced development can help with giving shadows detail, but it also compresses the mid tones. So its give and take. I prefer to expose at the proper speed but try and place the exposure correctly.

You can see the image the camera will take with the aid of the sensor on a screen, so why go to the trouble of having a moving mirror and a pentaprism? Hi, I have both reflex and mirrorless cameras. I buy them used and enjoy using both systems. I have also an xpro1 and shoot with the ovf, it is a very nice camera. I like the Xt1 too. I bought an old olympus E-420 dslr with 3 lenses recently for 45 euros (like new) and I must say that I am impressed by the beautiful colors straight out from the camera. I shoot raw and just need small adjustments like a little bit of contrast. I found that usually digital cameras have difficulty to render the red color and you get orange instead, but Olympus seems to control colors nicely. Then I am OK with 10 to 16 Mpix cameras because I print at max A3 format. I really don't understand that race for high Mpix especially when most of people don't print. Then I think that the big advantage of mirrorless cameras is that you can adapt almost all vintage lenses.

Wow C64. Those were times, my first serious program was written for C64 and was helping me to solve math problems from school. I was lazy enough already to spend some time writing programs to not have to work later :D But I agree, people are not interested in how they get the result, only in getting result. I suppose rising complexity of machines is partly at fault, but current education model sucks too.

Amen, current education system in all the western world is a huge problem. Lazy people are the best inventors! Years ago I wrote some code to import excel data into InDesign. A client had always the same catalog to create twice a year, they had all the content in Excel and usually took a month to copy the data and one of the client's secretary needed to be there helping. One year they were very late 'cause the usual trade show was anticipated and they needed the catalog, so I wrote the code and in a week the catalog was ready. The client wanted to pay me 1/4 of what he usually payed 'cause I worked less... I learned the lesson and I started to need 5 to 6 weeks for the next catalogs... still using the software, keeping his secretary busy doing nothing and I just enjoyed free time faking some work when he was around! He went bankrupt after some years obviously.

When I'm shooting with film, SLR is the way to go. Macro, zoom lens, tele lens... anything that is not suitable with rangefinder (mirrorless of film era). But the good thing is such limitations are not exist anymore on digital mirrorless system... so why bother keeping a mirror box, which make s the camera bigger?
@LuigiBarbano

because with SLR you have a different approach not seeing the subject filtered by the camera sensor. That is why I still like reflex also in digital.

Having got a K1 from a K5. Its a magical camera. The old 70's 80's lenses I have which never looked good on a aspc sensor. Look wonderful on this. Yes they arnt as sharp as a modern one but if thats importnt to you the. Why do you have an old £10 lense? And they make intrsting images. They aren't bad pictures like a crappy modern lense. Just not lab perfect. The only thing I will give a K5 over is is the bittons. Don’t get me wrong. The K1 has a very good layout. But the K5 has a better one for many critical things I feel. Like a selector between single or multiple focus points. No menue needed. The same for metering weights. But apart form that niggle its better in every way. The full frame is what you need for the old lenses. They were made for 35mm film. And it shows. Im loving the ISO performance. Its like another world. I would puck the K1 this over the K3iii any day. The full frame sensor alone simpmt makes it so much of a nicer camera. Adll the gorgeous viewfinder and all the other stuff. Its a winner. Those who haven't tried it dont get why a camera that people think is out of date is so magical to use.

I agree, it's a fantastic camera. I solved the lack of some buttons direct settings with the user modes. Some old lenses are fantastic. I'm addicted to the 55mm 1.8, absolutely a great lens and sharper than a lot of modern lenses. Thanks for sharing your experience!

dslr will never truly die so as long as companies like pentax carry the torch - i currently use a mirrorless sony a6600 due to its compact size and low weight combined with a prime but i know plenty of people who use canon and nikon dslrs still for music gigs around town :) i personally would like a dslr at some point just for the experience of the ovf and mirror slap, even if technically these days it's "inferior" to the technology found in mirrorless cameras

@LuigiBarbano
@LuigiBarbano 3 ай бұрын

Comunque grazie

If I just want to take snaps without being too much involved, I use my mirrorless cameras ( not many left). If I want to really enjoy the process of shooting, I take my SLRs and DSLRs. I have sold all my Fujifilm equipment to switch back to OVF. I only have Sony A7S and a couple MFT camers for portability.

I just bought the Z-1. With power zoom lens this thing is so loud, but other then this it looks like pretty nice camera. Plastic, but it feels solid, there is no weird "rubber" surfaces, LED is solid, viewfinder is great. I feel as if this is more solid then some of new digital cameras, as everything works and it is more or less 30 years old camera. Made from plastic. It is really fantastic tool. No wonder that it was pro camera in Pentax lineup. Bit heavy, and ergonomics compared to modern DSLRs is kinda weird and bulky but I suppose it is matter of getting used to it. I doubt it will replace K2 full time, but it will be nice side camera just to have and use something different. BTW - I just realized that I have more film cameras and film lenses then I have digital ones.

Ciao Luigi, buongiorno.

grazie a te. Concordo pienamente.
