I often wondered if he left over the promotion or Wolf359. He never says anything like “Honor to serve with you Captain” but he also looks Picard in the face and doesnt seem scared, timid or upset except that it’s his last time on the ship

Captain Picard made a special, purposeful trip to the transporter room from the bridge to see Miles off, after being told he just missed him. He didn't have to do that.

havent seen this before but great scene. reminds me of when i left a job i was at for awhile and speaking to my manager (who was my mentor) before i left. you grow familiar with one another but you also know its time to part ways. but i always remember what i learnt from him and we still talk now and then

In a way, this foreshadowed another way O'Brien and Picard common relationship. Picard being a POW, of the Cardasians, lead to Federation control of DS9. In a future DS9 episode, O'Brien became a fellow Cardasian POW.

O’Brien was an intricate member to TNG. But super beyond proud when he went on DS9 his roll grew that of engineer👏👏👏👏.

Miles O Brien sometimes seemed to be the only enlisted crew member of the Enterprise D, while everyone else only started at the rank of ensign. I welcomed his move to DS9; in the mixed circus of Star Fleet people, civilians and Bajorans he was much more than just the guy at the transporter controls. I was surprised that Sisko never got him an officer's commission; given his duties as chief engineer of a space station and flight engineer of the Defiant, he should have at least been Lt. Commander. It may also have been because Colm Meaney was at least a qualified actor - that's more than I would say about some of the other Star Trek actors...

One of the best parts, is the TNG theme smoothly transitioned to the DS9 theme.
