Very useful overview of the point where HS2, East-West Rail, Chiltern Line and The Stoke Mandeville Bypass all converge. An intricate relationship between them all. The Marsh Crossing was super-efficient previously (and agree should have been an underpass or bridged over). Let's hope the new rewired Crossing is not another "improvement" which slows everything and everybody down. Marsh Crossing was scheduled to re-open in August 2024, now it is rumoured end-of-September....continuing to hugely inconvenience hundreds of people daily. The UK state is incapable of producing anything honestly either On Time or On Budget. Great Video, neatly captioned though - thank you.

They're not going to put the level crossing back, surely? An avoiding bridge must be in the plan. Network rail is committed to eliminating as many LCs as possible. This is an easy one to bridge over.

Thank You. As someone at almost the other end of the Country (Tyneside) it's most interesting to see what is happening at this Location. I really feel that HS2 should have been a full length of England project, extended to the Central belt of Scotland up the spine of England, with tree-like branches off left and right servicing major population centres. That would truly have freed-up capacity on the existing network.

I used to use that level crossing often when I worked as a driver for Keith Garages back in the day - the owner of the company was a truly nice gent called Stuart Mills. He was always getting me to run down to his house in Bishopstone to pick up (or drop off) stuff in one of the company's vans. Now, my memory may be playing tricks on me - it was nearly 40 years ago - but I don't remember there being any barriers on the crossing back then!

Very interesting videos Karl particularly as a canal enthusiast myself. I find it hard to believe how overgrown the towpath and parts of the Aylesbury Arm are. I watch a lot of canal videos and I have to say non are as overgrown as this.I guess the Canal and River Trust don’t consider it as an important stretch only being an arm and little used by leisure boaters.How tranquil the Wendover Arm is particularly from Aston Clinton to Wendover.Would you say there would have been several locks at one time along this arm as at various points during your video it appeared that you were travelling uphill, maybe an optical illusion.Although living in the area myself I have never walked along the Wendover, but many years ago some of the Aylesbury Arm.Thank you.

I was in pain watching you ride a brand new bike through the mud 🫣 On every maiden voyage of an off-road bike I faff about getting past mud for some reason! I mean what's that all about, I ride all year and in all weathers and ground conditions 🤷‍♂️🤔😁 Lovely bike Karl, as soon as I get a sit on one to determine size I'm buying a Kathmandu 750 version to replace my railway line clockwork bike. I know yours is the MTB version and therefore you'll ride it in more demanding terrain, and there are lots of variables to factor in, but what kind of typical distance are you getting from a full charge? Mine will be ridden in mostly Eco mode on disused railway lines, so not too hilly. I do typically 60 - 70 miles without running out of energy, so this (my first) Ebike will just be used for when I can't be bothered to do a big mileage but still actually want to! That ironworks part of the canal was beautiful, postcard pretty! Cheers 🙂👍

Ha! A feature length video, Mr. Vaughan. I'll get back to you in a few hours. I've walked some of the Wendover arm just off the main canal where it's dry/drained. I believe there are ongoing efforts to reinstate that section. From what I've read, this arm of the canal leaked from the word go and, over the years, several fixes were attempted but ultimately resulted in them running a pipeline under the leaky section to keep feeding the main canal. The Wendover arm was built primarily as a feeder and, secondarily, was navigable for narrowboats delivering whatever to the good folks of Wendover. Righto. I'm going to get stuck in to this cycle ride. Edit: You learn something every day. The sump and pipeline under the dry section were installed in the early 1900s and the flow from the streams above Wendover end up in one of the reservoirs. From there it is pumped back uphill, presumably to the lower section of the Arm where it then flows into, and tops-up, the Grand Union proper.

Hi there Karl question did you de-restrict that bike it seems to be going awfully fast for a standard out of the box bike. Very smooth without any degrading of speed as do the out of the box cubes do. I think someone at cube forgot to reduce the speed settings on yours because there is no way you were travelling at 15mph. The motor is restricted at factory to meet UK laws. You should be feeling a cut off when you reach maximum speed. Which is 15mph I could not see any evidence of that just smooth stable speed. That is normally only achieved on a de-restricted bike with a bosch engine.

I travelled the diversionary route yesterday ( Saturday) and there were loads of signs in Thame by the bypass so if those people missed them then I hate to think what there driving skills are like. If they joined the A418 after Thame I assume they would be locals who should have been aware of the closure since it has been advertised enough. @TrevorWilliams-fq8mg
@TrevorWilliams-fq8mg 5 күн бұрын
There are a number of problems to achieve that. 1) The HS2 Agency are short of staff so cannot cope with managing the workload. 2) there are literally thousands of planning requirements to meet from hundreds of planning authorities and a shortage of town planners so the scope of works programme is running hopelessly late. 3) There are thousands of services diversions and highway alterations to make. Every time a services diversions becomes known the Contractors hsve to agree a method statement with the services provider on the proposed method of diversion. And every time a service crosses a road, river or railway the Highways Agency. Network Rail or British Waterways have to be consulted. All this means the project will run for many more years, with resulting cost rises which nobody can foresee.

I agree it's a mess on the landscape but as for few people using it in the future, I'm pretty sure the same was said about the first motorways. They created a huge amount of mess at the time and now most people don't give them a second thought. Remember this new railway line doesn't just serve the south. It is to release capacity further north, at least that's what the experts say. It remains to be seen if that actually happens.
@1nickevans
@1nickevans 6 күн бұрын
@KarlVaughan yes that is true. But motorways were a transportation solution yet to exist, you can use a motorway with easy and cheaply, The same cant be said about this, for us we would have to get the train one way to then go back the other way...making the speed of travel time to brum on hs2 of no benefit. There are railway networks already and when was the last time many of us went up north regularly on a train? I dont know...not me or anyone I know. If I was to travel any length of the country Id be doing it in a car so I can take what I need. Personally, I think the cost and the damage it's done to an already overcrowded landscape in terms of construction was an absolute waste. What with the boom in remote working that seems to have stayed in place post covid and big companies reducing office space etc...Im not even sure the theres as much of a case to say people will use it to travel for work in a huge way. But you videos are very interesting to see what they are doing....the drone has incredible video quality.

@KarlVaughan
@KarlVaughan 6 күн бұрын
If you look at the stats regarding train usage currently the demographic has changed and figures are returning to pre-Covid levels. I was surprised when I found this out as I expected the same as you with people now working from home meaning usage had fallen. The problems on the rail network are around Crewe and elsewhere in that area. It is a bottleneck apparently which is why HS2 is being built - to take the fast trains off those lines so they can be freed up for local services. I'm only going off what others in the know have said. The KZbin channel Green Signals often has people on who work in the industry and they are very knowledgable. In the UK large "national" infrastructure projects are (and have always been) granted deemed planning permission by Act of Parliament so that (for example) individual land owners or local authorities cannot "hold the project to ransom" so to speak or veto it. The HS2 Act provides some ability for Local Authorities to have some input on the details. So, for (a trite) example, they can ask for a building to be painted red instead of green, but they cannot fundamentally veto that the building gets built. If they try to "game" the process to filibuster, ultimately it ends up in the hands of the Secretary Of State and they will often rule to the effect of "is you cannot agree something between you then get what Parliament authorised in the Act."

@@fndjfgsdk .. haha, yet another gullible HS2 fanboy quoting from HS2 Ltd's "perfect world" scenario. According to its own forecasts, HS2 is likely to result in the emission of 1.49 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, due to the way in which it's constructed. Worse, the proposal to run trains at 360 km per hour will require 50% more energy than the existing Eurostar trains. Such specifications deliver insignificant economic benefits & also require carbon-intensive slab-tracks. This doesn't even take into account the damage & disturbance HS2 will inflict on wildlife sites & woodlands. It's expected that 108 ancient woodlands will be negatively affected, as well as an additional 693 local wildlife sites. HS2 Ltd admitted that in its expected 120-year lifespan, HS2 will probably never be carbon neutral & are you aware that they've already incurred numerous fines for multiple breaches of environmental issues? Thousands of trees planted along the route in Warwickshire where the vast majority perished due to lack of aftercare. The pollution of streams, rivers & other waterways with toxic chemicals. The bulldozing of mile upon mile of hedgerows containing nesting birds when they specifically promised to wait until the nesting season was over .. the list goes on. Sadly for you, the new Labour government have got NO plans whatsoever to revive any of the cancelled sections .. in a recent interview, Sir Keir Starmer said.. "it's not possible to do as the Tory government have blown the budget & contracts are going to be cancelled" .. excellent news from Labour, at least they've got the sense to see this massive white elephant for what it really is - a massive cash cow.

Wotcha Karl! Great update. I still suspect the bridge decision is a bit of political point-scoring, somewhere along the line, given the amount of time and effort that would have gone into the civil engineering of the entire HS2 project so far as bridges and tunnels etc are concerned. It's not like they're a bunch of amateurs who scribbled some stuff on the back of a napkin, after all! So it's just plain old-fashioned feet-dragging IMO. I also got a tiny snip of my old house again bud. Always gives me a buzz, even after almost 30 years.

Thanks again. I agree with you there. This project has been meticulously planned and this is why I'm so surprised at the current situation regarding the overbridge. It's been like it for months. Every time I visit the site it looks the same!
