I've always wanted to do an engine swap to my car but always overthought MOT's. Would an MOT tester pass this, given that the engine is from another car?
@cgtenКүн бұрын
An MOT test is basically a checklist of roadworthyness, it doesn’t take things like whether parts are factory fitted into consideration. All it cares about is whether requirements are met, such as emissions and that it’s mounted properly. I spoke with an MOT tester about emissions and he said that as long as the level is below the threshold it’ll be fine.

Just placeholder hardware for now, I mentioned it in the video near the end. It’s local hardware store stuff which is easy to pick up and modify before spending higher amounts on the proper hardware for this application.

VW 1.8T AUQ into Micra?! Wow. That will be powerful beast :) 11:03 Too many wire speeds, too low gas. That causes this big red ball at the end of the wire.

What do you think, should you add some gussets to the plate between the mounts? You spent quite a while engineering gussets to those mounts, but then you used just a simple plate to connect the engine to the chassis. I would imagine that the plate would fatique over time. 🤷♂️
@cgten6 күн бұрын
Yes it probably will fatigue, but I needed to see where the engine rests when not supported from underneath. Since filming that, I’ve already modified that bracket because the whole block was too far back and hit the bulkhead. Once it’s in the right spot, I’ll make beefier brackets.

I love your work but I have to warn you, the engine is too heavy for the chassis. The car is going to be front heavy and not handle the best, especially when braking around corners. Lupos and Arosas with 20VT engines have that problem.
@ryangabb7433 күн бұрын
Lupo 20vts can handle great with the correct suspension and geo setup.
@cgten3 күн бұрын
Yep, a common oversight with engine swaps is using stock suspension, or fitting upgrades that don’t consider the changes in weight.
@ryangabb7433 күн бұрын
@@cgten I see it all the time on the mk2 pages “VR6 swaps handle like sh*t” when the only experience they have is on £200 JOM coilovers
@Ismaak53 күн бұрын
@@ryangabb743 There is only so much you can correct with suspension. As far as I know, nobody has made a 20vt Lupo/Arosa handle well till now. Swaping an engine 150 kilos heavier than the car was ever designed to have at the front makes the back lift on brakes or around corners no matter what you do suspension wise. The engine is too heavy and sits too far front. And the car is too light to counteract the weight.
@ryangabb7432 күн бұрын

wat you could do to get the torch in all the way to the back is take off the outer piece and turn the shielding gas way up (maibe even add a seperate hose with the gas flowing intoo the pocket so it floods the space youre welding inside of , should work but cost a lot of gas doing it
@cgten8 күн бұрын
I run the gas at maximum currently, but that’s because I use a poor quality regulator with disposable bottles. I hope to upgrade to a refillable gas bottle with a proper regulator very soon.
@watahyahknow8 күн бұрын
@@cgten we have a gasbottle trade system here ( Supergas (HWTS)) , you buy the gasbottle with the gas the first time and trade in the bottle for a filled one when empty , no rent on bottle and i think 65 euro for 20 liter of the gas , i bought my regulator second hand , a lot of welders switching to digital gauges , while the analog ones are still fine , tried buying one from a chineese website but the bottle connection is different one average job should pay you the purchase price for the bottle back compared to buying multiple of those trow away ones

Could use a 1.8t vw beetle sump for more clearance, get the engine sitting lower
@cgten10 күн бұрын
I considered the beetle pan, but it only clears around 10mm and the gearbox bell housing still ends up too low. The old position also meant that the driveshafts were angled upwards at ideal ride height, so raising everything was the right move in the end.

I am not a professional mig. welder and I have Clark 90 machine with wire feed dial from 1 to10 and switches for current, I have found some good videos on ebay on how to work out the wire speed for the numbers on the dial and switch positions for the current depending on the material thickness and wire diameter, their are some good charts on the web for this information, also I have found using magnets to hold the material together results in a terrible weld but is very handy to hold it until you get a few spots on then remove the magnets, this works for me, I hope it helps
