Just got off the phone from the Perth mint asking regards the....“CertiCard® SECURITY CASE” And yes apparently they use to have that printed on their older green packs but not the new black ones.

I got caught out with one of these bars. I bought it in May 2016 and for all intent purposes it looked real so I placed it in my collection. I had no other bars to compare it with until I got hold of an order of five 2.5 gram Pamp Bars recently and was shocked at the difference in size as they were probably about 4-6 times smaller in terms of mass whereas they should have been half the size. I took 5 gram Perth Mint bar to a reputable Gold dealer who was going to buy it off me until I mentioned that I thought it was fake and he stated he would need to open it to check. It weighed 5.1 grams and when I said that he could file it and check with acid I thought that he was going to pass out with shock when he discovered it was actually fake. I subsequently went to the Police and filed a report as this seller on Ebay had sold Gold bars to many many people. I am out what I paid for this item but I genuinely hope that they get caught and prosecuted because selling fake items is a really despicable thing to do! P.S. it had all of the aforementioned tells in your video i.e. the matting on the Swan, the rim around the bar and the thickness of course.

Well I have been seeing lot of videos of fake gold bar almost all of them don't take the bar out and compare. Also why don't you let the viewers know who the seller is. I buy gold all the time , first thing I do is take it out and compare with what I already have. Do the weight test and magnet test. Also take it to the coin dealer and verify. Also a basic rule don't ever buy from individuals just stick with proper companies in ebay(apex bullion exchange etc...) EBay has 30 days money back guarantee also you will get receipts from sellers if they are companies instead of individuals. So just don't tell it's fake without taking it out. Waste of time and wrong information.

I'm curious on your findings. Did anybody do any form of assaying? or other testing other than the visual inspections listed below? All of the most common assaying processes I know are:Fire Assay - Fire assay is one of the oldest methods of checking the purity of content in precious metals. ... Dry Assaying - Dry assaying works for gold and silver, as well. ... Wet Assaying - In wet assaying, solvents dissolve the sample. ... Spectrograph Assaying.

I have just bought one of these off Ebay and needed to check for any fakes. I am not saying you are wrong in your determination of yours being a fake but there are a number of things troubling me. According to the information on the Perth Mint website (admittedly, published 1 year before your upload) your fake should have the following errors- 1) It should not have the swan motif water mark on the card background - yours has, as mine. 2) The fake black card features the words “CertiCard® SECURITY CASE” instead of “The Perth Mint tamper-evident case” - Yours has the correct wording, as mine 3) The letter ‘B’ is omitted from the six-digit bar number on the back of the black card. - yours shows a letter B, as mine. www.perthmintbullion.com/blog/blog/15-05-20/Don_t_Get_Duped_By_Fake_Minted_Bars.aspx 4) You mention that the thickness is double what it should be. This is hard to measure in a blister pack but, with the proper thickness being (near enough) 4 mm, your would need to be around 8 mm which it does not look to be - probably nearer the 4? As mine. The dimensions for this bar are here - 41 x 24 x 3.9 mm www.perthmintbullion.com/Buy-Gold-Bars/1oz--Minted.aspx?productId=100 5) I cannot verify the finish around the swan impression is correct to an original. I also found some more images of fakes and none seem to match yours or mine. www.google.co.uk/search?q=fake+perth+mint+1+oz+gold+bar&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b&gfe_rd=cr&ei=PSIiWPWDO_Pv8AeLg6vIBg I am not being critical, I thank you for the `heads-up', but it leaves me puzzled and wondering if yours was the real thing afterall? Perhaps the fakers changed things in that 12 months but seems unlikely. This is my first Ebay purchase of gold, rather than via bullion dealers, thinking (wrongly) the sealed card gave me certainty so I now need to decide my next move. I could return it for a refund claiming it is fake but have no real grounds. I could remove it from the packaging to test. Not good - harder to sell on or return. I could drill the bottom edge through the plastic with a VERY small drill to a very shallow depth as a destructive test to check for any different substrate material. Not ideal, it spoils it slightly but gives me (and others) peace of mind without having completely removed it. We'll see. Thanks for uploading your video.

Hello My friend actually contacted Perth Mint to point out that their dimensions are wrong. He got a letter back today clarifying this and they have changed their website Those dimensions at the MAXIMUM any given dimension can be. If the bar was really of those dimensions it would be over 2 oz. Fakers have basically USED this to pedal fake bronze bars that fit that dimension profile. Basically IF the width and length dimensions are 41 and 24 mm then the thickness should be around 1.65 mm

Oh and the fakers DEFINITELY changed this post the Perth Mint publishing its advisory. Fakers are always improving their methods of faking. I am a keen collector of Japan trade dollars and 1 yen silver coins. Around 10 years ago ANY fake was very easy to spot if you had some experience. Nowadays the fakes can be pretty much perfect and require tonnes of experience to distinguish from variety variants, There was even one that I was 50% sure was a fake that I had to have graded to determine its authenticity. It turned out to be a variety of which there was only one previous graded example by the particular grading company so I was lucky but on the other hand there was a trade dollar that looked real but retooled (quite common for a valuable coin) that turned out to be an excellent fake. At least 3 coin dealers were fooled by this... fakes are becoming amazingly good and so this is true for gold also.

you are right they are fakes. They are getting much better at faking Perth mint bars with brass. But fortunately Brass is way off in terms of density so do the specific gravity test - you don't need to remove the bar you can just estimate the dimensions. In my experience with 1 OZ bars (only 1 oz because bigger ones can be filled inside and covered in solid gold) you can estimate the specific gravity without removing the packaging and if it is within 20% of the correct number it is most likely to be gold. The fakers have yet to be able to cheaply fake a 1oz bar with the same specific gravity they just rely on you not looking too carefully at the thickness when you compare bar dimensions...

Hi, To cut a long story short, I calculated the bar weight in gold would be 2oz, queried the 3.9/4.0 thickness specified on the Perth Mint site and they conformed they had it wrong, it should be about half that, and that my 2oz was about right. I then got refunded - lucky escape! The fakers had obviously fixed the original errors to make them almost indiscernible from the real thing. What annoyed me was that I could see that 2 or 3 others before me had made successful bids at around £1000 yet I could not make contact to warn them. Ebay promised to see to that but I think it would be unlikely. They do not do enough to stop the scammers. Cheers.

The solution is to stop buying from eBay and buy instead from a reputable bullion dealer, preferably one that gets its items directly from the Perth Mint.
