Its pretty unreal how much worse this looks to do than a 240. I have a 240t with full spherical and delrin bushings and it was a cake walk to do most of that, but i recently got a 940t for a daily and i figured id just keep it stock. Seeing how much random fluff they added to the rear suspension design makes this look miserable to do. Cant wait

I'm facing the same problem, my 1997 940 failed MOT because of too uneven brake force left and right (dutch MOT) You should be able to turn the adjuster through the bighole hub. In the disc/drum there should be a same hole, so you cn adjust it with the disc mounted. Look here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rn3SioWlr7mppZY

The right way to fix this, also the hard way is to support the engine and transmission from above drop the cradle. put your square tubing in the position of the old rotted attachment point, weld in a new nut. Cut out and plate the hole in the side, make sure to use weldable or zinc primer to inhibit rust.

So, I go to pull my old torque rods out and wow are those bolts a pain! I'm stuck on the top torque rod bolt. (Highest one) there is no room for sockets and I live in the rust belt (ny) so the rust is strong! lol. So I'm stuck for the moment until I can get a proper wrench. (13/16) the 18mm's were easy tho! Any more advice? lol.

Yes! I used a long extension on my breaker bar so that I had some swing room in the wheel well. IIRC I was able to fit a box wrench jammed against the underside of the body on the inboard side. I'm in CT, I know your pain, we sand and salt EVERYTHING. I don't drive my 740 in the winter EDIT check around 6:33 to see how I got the upper bolt

That sounds like a good idea and probably what I will end up doing. (Did not pull the wheels off yet) guess I'll have to, atleast on the passenger side. But my fuel lines are still in the way and I am not fond of bending them too far back. Did you have that problem on the outer side top bolt? Once again, I appreciate all your insight and help.

So, after letting it sit soaked in PB oil over night basically did the job! (That and a giant proper 13/16 wrench!) lol. The only struggle after that was getting the custom arms to line up but jacking up the rear end and some muscle pretty much solved that. So, instead of a bushing replacement I picked up new (renewed) upper/lower torque rods (with poly bushings pre-installed) from Retro Turbo for my 1995 Volvo 940T. If I'm just swapping the 2 rods out, do I need to disconnect everything (drive shaft, etc?)
@an5ama54 жыл бұрын
No, you won't need to disconnect the drive shaft, but I did take the panhard bar off at the same time. The frame and axel were supported independently of each other so I could position it with my floor jacks.

I went back to watch the video and about half way through I can see that I in fact disconnected the drive shaft at the dif. I was going to replace the dif seal but decided it wasn't leaking enough. I'm not sure if that helped out hindered my repair. I just felt I should correct my earlier reply.

Thank you so much, Andrew. I have the exactly same problem in my Volvo 960 II -97 and I bought these adjusters already (they fit fine without any shortening) but adjusting the brake shoes is impossible as you know. I was about to drill a hole thru the (new) brake drums but this your idea is much easier as the drum is thick and hard to drill. The only thing I'm concerned is how the Finnish M.O.T. takes it if there is a hole in the dust shield. We have probably the world's strictest inspection system. But you could drill a round hole and use blind rubber grommet. The only I wanted is HORIZONTAL video as this was very hard to watch. =)
@an5ama54 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for the comments, I appreciate them. I have since installed a standard rubber plug for drum brake shoes in the dust cover. This has not been a perfect fix but has worked better than the original.

I'm planning on doing this on my 2004 Vue Red Line. Now that it has been a year since the repair was done on yours, how is it holding up? Did it add any weird vibration? Any other recommendations before I do what you did?
@an5ama54 жыл бұрын
Hi, the repair has held up extremely well and regular inspections revealed no cracks in my welding. There were no noticeable vibrations because the repair bypasses the hard attachment point that failed. To remove those two rear bushings, placed on an armature (?), you first have to loosen and remove the single pin (fastened by two bolts) which supports that whole subframe in the opposite direction, also loosen both of the two torque links (?) on at least one side of them, whereafter you can push the whole subframe forward a bit, thus making that armature free to be removed and treated separately.

What should I do to minimize the risk of destroying the vehicle's electrical system; especially the computer?

Hello, I did not take any special precautions, other than disconnecting the battery. TBH, I hadn't considered damage to the electrical system, but none occurred! @@an5ama5 Andrew, thank you for responding. I have gone ahead and cut out all the decayed sheet metal and plan on rebuilding the body back down to the cradle using steel flat bar and square steel tubing (ASTM A500). So far I have managed to get down to a good starting point and have been developing a strategy for the new structure that will replace the old sheet metal. I must have used every type grinder I have to get in there and cut out the metal that is not needed for the rebuild. Kind of like doing dental work on a car. BTW There is no way I plan on even attempting to mimic the original geometry. My structure will be more robust yet simple. The OE bolts and nuts are toast. I will be replacing them with a larger diameter (5/8") grade 8 bolt. The OE bolt was metric and miked up at just over 1/2" diameter. I'll also be incorporating a nylon insert locknut. Also grade 8. The new structure will feature that access window except I am adding cover plate with a gasket to seal out the ingress of water. That is the reason these cars disintegrated in this area in the first place. Frigging GM. All those jerks needed to do was incorporate a rubber plug in that access hole and that rust would have never happened. That is my observation at least. Either their engineers are just plain morons or they don't care. Not sure which. Maybe both. Like I said, I plan on getting a few more years out of my Vue as it only has 150K miles. I am videoing this and hope to post it once I am finished. I'll give you a shout once I do.
