Never been a big fan of the way Ali, Leonard and Mayweather fought. All great boxers, but not necessarily great “fighters”. Give me a Duran, Hagler, Holmes or Tyson type of attacking fighter for exciting matches.

Great clip BELOW of Ali and Holmes from the When We Were Kings documentary. The first few seconds are more like a fight than a spar [the rest is Ali conditioning himself for Foreman]. THAT Ali comfortably beats Holmes, even in his prime. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIOahXuonddkqa8

Ali would "work" with his sparring partners on defense and moving .If him and Holmes fought when Ali was like he was in 1975 (when Ali was 33 .)Ali would be able to hit him with the right hand over Holmes jab and he would stop Larry.

The great Ali never wanted to hit Holmes for some reason. Maybe because he was a sparring partner? There's no points for blocking and ducking. Anyone good enough to take the fight up to the great Holmes found that he wasn't invincible.

LARRY HOLMES fought in the 70's, but never once fought a Prime Great Fighter in the 70's . He never fought GEORGE FOREMAN, RON LYLE or JOE FRAZIER. He fought a 35 Year Old Past Prime KEN NORTON in 1978. He fought an extremely faded PAST PRIME MUHAMAD ALI in 1979. And even EARNIE SHAVERS was 34 and 35 the 2 times HOLMES fought him, and SHAVERS is not even an ALL TIME HALL OF FAME GREAT. So HOLMES was a "great fighter" , but people really overrate his resume a little too much.

All Ali did was jump up and down and run around the ring for no reason. No way Ali could beat Larry Holmes. He couldn't win against boxers who can jab and counter as he showed during all three of Norton fights, which by the way, he lost them all. As great as Ali was, the two foes that he could not beat in his life time. Kenny Norton and the greatest of all time, Larry Holmes.

Not true, Ali won 2 fights of 3 against Norton, so 2:1. In the first fight in the sixth round Norton could land a punch on Ali's chin, it was broken, but Ali fought till to the end of the fight. You don't understand Ali's training sessions. Ali wasn't like any other fighter in the whole history of Boxers. In sparring sessions or even in fights you can recognize his intelligence. Sometimes he didn't hit his opponent for maybe 2 or 3 rounds just to train his reflexes and cover and in addition to read out his opponent's strong and weak sides. The only reason Muhammad Ali did not fight Ken Norton a fourth time was he knew he was finished after the Spinks rematch, and retired. All the strong Boxers like Norton or Frazier got knocked out easily by Foreman in the first or second round, only Ali knocked out Foreman.

Ali in his prime against Holmes in his prime would have been a very close fight. They both had basically the same style and speed. It may have ended in a draw. Ali should have retired for good after winning the title back from Leon Spinks. Ali's last two fights against Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick were sad to watch.

Ali's style was better version of micheal spinks snd also you know what spinks has done to holmes, Larry holmes was regarded as a great boxer because he picked his opponents (except someone such as ken norton), of course I have to give credict to holmes because his jab was considerably fast and finisher but it doesn't mean that his fight against prime ali would competitive. In my opinion Ali would beat holmes by 4 or 5 raund a head

Nice footwork from Ali. Holmes would've been a big problem for a prime Ali. Ali struggled with good jabbers like Norton and Holmes was considerably better than Norton...a little taller with longer reach as well.

Shit! I’d like to see any bad mouth on this comment section step in with Larry Holmes today. Ali was using Larry up, this little bit of video. Trying to increase his defense. And Larry Holmes wasn’t enough. Then Ali got extremely sick and beat Ali up! What a man. Tyson kicked Larry’s ass! Badly. He got taken out of that ring in a stretcher

That's why sparring isn't the same as an actual fight coz shortly after this sparring these two faught in a real boxing match and Ali failed to replicate what he was doing in sparring and couldn't Dodge Holmes lethal jabs and he was badly whooped and people started to blame Holmes is total absurdity. Ali was great but some victories against Sonny Liston leaves much to be desired and I wouldn't be surprised if the mob didn't urge Liston to lose against Ali. If it was in the 60s Holmes would have been told to lose by the mob to this past prime Ali coz before the 80s, the mob did decide the winner of some fights they had an interest in and failure to dance to their tune would result in catastrophic consequences if you beat their guy and the worst victim was Liston

Ali and HOlmes had history and it wasn't always good. Ali let Holmes go as his sparring partner because Holmes had become World Champion Material, and Ali knew it, couldn't afford to keep that man in camp, Ali was getting older and Holmes was getting better especially with the jab! Holmes also had bad feelings against Ali for the way he had treated Frazier. Although he worked for Ali and got his style from Ali, Frazier too was his hero, that Philadelphia connection! That's why during there title fight an over the hill Ali had no chance against a stronger, fresher and less battle worn Holmes. Holmes punished Ali in that fight to show him he was better, and to get back at him for Frazier! Bad Blood was between the two and you could see it each time Holmes hit Ali in that corner. That night Cus D Amato who loved Ali like a son called Dundee and had him put Ali on. Crying and yelling at Ali for allowing Holmes who Cus refereed to as "That Bum" to let him hit him that way. With Cus sitting there was a young Mike Tyson, and Tyson didn't like the fact that Cus was upset or that Holmes had beaten Ali. Tyson asked to speak to Ali and once on the phone he promised Ali he would revenge Ali! Fast forward 8 years later and Tyson who was the current champion and Holmes the challenger would stand in the ring across from each other and then one lone figure was introduced, the announcer called out the name Ali, and the crowd shows their appreciation. Ali, who now was battling the effects of wars in the ring and the onset of Parkinson's Disease walked over to Holmes and shuck his hand, he then walked over to Tyson and whispered in, what he said you would have to ask Tyson but it has been speculated that he told Tyson to "Get Him" Tyson would affix his gaze into Ali's face and nod his head up and down in acknowledgement! Tyson brutally avenged Ali by knocking Holmes out! Holmes had referred to Tyson as a "Thug" and said he would end up in jail prior to their fight! Tyson made him feel those comments in the ring, battering Holmes in the finals rounds of their fight. Unfortunately Tyson would end up in jail, but years later from the fight and the jail stint Holmes and Tyson would sit down in an interview together and discuss their fight. They were friendly now but that was only at the surface! Holmes jokingly asked Tyson why did he hit him so hard, and Tyson responded "I don't know, Why did you hit Ali so hard?" Holmes laughed it off but he never looked Tyson in the eye during that exchanged and he never answered him! Years later in an interview Holmes would asked if Tyson would have survived during the 70's when Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Lyle, Norton and Shavers walked the land and Holmes replied "No disrespect to Tyson, but No!" I don't know if Ali and Holmes ever resolved their issues!
