Great sequence! Why didn't Brecht set it in Berlin, though? He wanted the words to be accessible to a German audience, so why not the setting?
@matticchioАй бұрын
He based it on "The Beggars' Opera" by John Gay, which was set in London.

Wachte auf und war geschändet Mackie welches war dein Preis? translated into English: Ballad of Mack the Knife And the shark, he has teeth; he has them in his face. And Macheath, he has a knife, but the knife, no one sees. And the shark's fins are red when he sheds blood; Mack the Knife wears a glove on which no sign of a crime can be seen. By the green waters of the Thames, suddenly people drop down. It's neither plague nor cholera, it's said: Mack's about. On a beautiful, blue-skied Sunday, a dead man lies on the Strand, and someone turns the corner, the one they call Mack the Knife And Schmul Meier's still not been found, as with many a rich man, and his money has Mack the Knife, against whom nothing's to be proved. Jenny Towler was found with a knife in her chest, and down on the Embankment there's Mack the Knife, who knows nothing of any of it. Where is Alfons Glite, the cabbie? Will he ever come to light? Whoever might know, Mack the Knife has no idea. And the great fire in Soho, seven children and an old man. In the crowd, Mack the Knife, whom one asks nothing, and who knows nothing. And the underage widow, whose name everyone knows, woke up and was defiled. Mack, what was your price?

Around this time, she broke an informal taboo against performing (or even speaking) German in Israel, by singing this. Given who she was and what she meant, nobody complained. Goebbels offered her a fortune to make propaganda films for the Nazis. She refused. When she started doing USO shows in Europe, Himmler put a price on her head. She crossed the Rhine in April 1945 to perform in Germany within rifle shot of the front. When Stars & Stripes asked why she would take such a risk, she replied: "Auf anstand." "Out of decency." RIP.

The original, "Der Blaue Engel", starring Emil Jannings, a truly great actor. He was superb in his role. Please see the film. Don't forget to bring half a dozen hankies... Only people are people, and bit player Marlene Dietrich became famous. I could cry. No use at all, of course, and she is quite good, and got better. Of course, beatiful legs didn't hurt...
