How did you make the background noise of what looks to be a library louder than your voice? It wouldve been nice to hear what you had to say, but couldn't do it, too much noise.

The running background fan noise makes it nearly impossible to grasp what you're saying. If you have a Google 8, the new audio enhanced feature allows you to remove background noise. You should get it. Use the software and re-upload this video

I was interested in your statement suggesting the possibility of the person telling the government, "I deny consent, you go practice your government elsewhere." You said it was an absurd position. But, in a sense, this is a part of Locke's theory. The people can deny their consent to the government and, thereby, the government loses its authority to make rules. Now, there is a distinction between "the people" and "a person". How relevant this distinction is, I cannot say right off. However, note that we are not talking about a contract between the government and an individual. We are talking about a contract among a group of people to form and to abide by the rules of a contract. What if, in your case of telling students that the class time is changed, a student denies consent. Does this mean that it is illegitimate for the class to meet at the new time - does a lone individual have this type of veto power? Or is it the case, "Well, we're going to meet at that time and you need to figure out how you are going to deal with that fact." Assuming a class size of 50 - the choice is between 49 people agreeing to a different time imposing their wish on 1, as compared to 1 person not wishing to change imposing their wish on 49. If 49 people agree to a new time, it seems quite reasonable to expect the 1 person to choose between staying in the class or leaving. The only alternative to the majority imposing their will on the minority is for the minority to impose their will on the majority. Since these are the only two options, reason suggests choosing the former. Now, let's put these 50 people in a lifeboat at sea such that it would be extremely costly for the lone dissenter to just leave. The group is deciding on which direction to row. Any notion that says that a minority has a moral right to determine where to go will yield inevitable conflict. The only system that allows a community to settle on one unique answer is one in which the majority decides. So long as one is obtaining the benefits of the lifeboat, one tacitly consents to abide by decisions that are reached by the only method that allows for unique answers, and thus the only method recommended by reason..

I think the legal system has a consequentialist, utilitarian bias. The problem, as pointed out in the video, is that lawmakers are fooling themselves when they think they know what the consequences/effects of their laws are going to be.

Well what's the answer? 😂 those were some good questions at the end that I don't know the answer to.. guess we'll find out. I will be grateful for the times of peace I experience, this is a crazy world it's a miracle we haven't destroyed it yet.

A great example of primordialism is the battle at Thermopylae. The Greeks fought against the Persians, not for their own individual freedoms, but for the freedom and preservation of their nation and their sovereignty over their own land. One more is the early Germanic populations, they have a word for foreigner: Wahloz. Just that word tells me that they distinguished other ethnic groups from their own.

Hi. This was a great video! I was wondering what are your thoughts on Crito when it comes to taking a liberal or authoritarian interpretation of the work? Do you believe that the argument of Crito imply authoritarianism? Has anyone done any work on this issue and are there any recommended readings you would suggest? Thanks!

I would want lawmakers to be impartial. I think it is a problem that politicians are often beholden to the party ideology and of course, motivated by money. I think you can make law because it has a good outcome and because it good intent. Ideal all law making should be good intent and we need to hold politicians to acting in good faith all the time.

Thinking about it, one overarching theme of modern movies, many of which are being perceived as nihilist, might actually just be showing characters holding principles of deontology or virtue ethics failing in spite of their rules or good character - demonstrating that the greatest harm can come from the best intentions - and realising they have to adopt a more consequentialist framework instead. Making choices that might be ethically required, even if they are not "moral" in a deontological sense.

I will say that a person can be deontologists, virtue ethicists and consequentialists matter for matter though, as context itself is another consistency that no ideology should prevent from discussion - that as a disagreement to the final point you made. I don't care how "illogical" that seems to some, anyway. - Your Quality Apologist

Is there a commonly used term in PE for a morally or socially valuable good? Seems like there may be a conceptual gap due to the normative nature of the distinction, but it would still be an objective category given that normative ideas are a social fact.
