I don't care how many stalls you have or that you own goat or what you pull it with. I watched this to learn about the spreader. Please stick to the subject.

They definitely went cheap on that locking mechanism. I hope I'm not giving anyone bad ideas, but it almost looks like it could unlock itself by just backing up. Although, if it did do that, it would present problems on 180° corners. And it will bind if it doesn't unlock. That's just the nature of wheels and axles. That extra beater is probably there to help regulate the flow. I could see it jamming up with thick or really fibrous material. That one exposed bearing just looks like a sealed bearing to me, but I can't swear to anything without disassembling one of those myself. I can say I confronted a company we bought a product from which had sealed bearings and grease zirks, which I have seen done on a LOT of things, especially newer stuff. They admitted they put those zirks on their to pass some sort of either standard or requirement even tho they don't actually do anything. Just some food for thought. Sealed bearings are not a "new" thing" but they are kinda new. They started using them in cars even back to the '80's, I think. They are cheaper than serviceable bearings, but not as easy to make greasable, although you can make them greaseable, but they can never be adjustable.

Could this be used as a top soil dresser for dropping a uniformed thin amount of topsoil evenly over lawns?

The box looks a little small.. I would like to have seen how it spreads. If you could stand behind it & record while it's spreading. Lol

A year later... it is still running, but I had trouble with seizing on both wheels at different times. The wheels run on bushings (not bearings) on the axle of the spreader drum. It happened that one would seize and so the drum would not freewheel - thus the drum would always be rotating. I had to remove the wheel to fix it (remove the locking lever and slide the wheel off - with some force if it has seized). I found burring and scoring on the axle. I bit of grinding with a Dremel tool fixes that, and I greased the axles directly. There are no grease fittings for the wheels. I believe this might have been because I was always locking both wheels while spreading -- not sure. I only lock one wheel unless the ground is slippery.

Thanks for the initial review. It's been almost a year, do you still feel like it's going to last a long time?

Would something like this work for top soil around yard?

I don't think it would be precise or controlled enough for topsoil spreading. The gap between the bin that the spreader drum is fixed dimension, so if the material is too fine it would just pour through. Too dense and it might clog. It would be a guess as to whether it would work or not and I haven't tried anything like that. It seems to be optimized for manure. BTW... hay mixes don't work too well. Hay, by itself is too light to feed through. If there is enough other stuff in the hay, then it is OK, but can leave some in the bin.

This may be a dumb question but I have just gotten this product and I don’t see what keeps the manure from falling through when you load it. There are gaps on each side of the drum that turns. Am I missing something?

If you start by loading it with whole manure, like from your paddocks, and no shavings, you will be OK. If you load it with lots of shavings first, the shavings will fall through.
