Thos is by far better than what we see in the show ring currently but this would still not be conducive to long distance, stamina/endurance. The German shepherd is literally the only canine and breed bred purposefully with this amount of angulation.

This dog was working dog and was one of the best German Shepherds in the German Show bloodlines. If only todays dogs would've retained his traits they wouldn't be looking the way they look now.(not that its bad but because it could help as far as functionality goes)

He wasn't JUST a show dog. He was a very good working dog as well. And he was very powerful. This slow motion vid low key did him dirty. This gait is just for show either. It's for herding, which is the GSDs original purpose. It allows the dogs to cover the maximum amount of ground with the least amount of strides. It preserves energy and stamina and gives better control over the sheep.

OMG is this freak breeding, it looks like a hyaena, whats wrong with its back legs???!!!
@PlainsPup8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Loopy Pure-breeding has been ruining a number of dogs for decades now, including the GSD. Beginning in the 1970s, dog fanciers began preferring GSDs with a low croup and hocks, i.e. a sloping back and angled hind legs. This could have been to increase stride for the "flying trot," or to promote a permanent dramatic pose when standing (like a hero coming over the rise) - both for the show ring, not functionality. In either case, that modification is ruinous to these dogs, which now have difficulty standing, walking, and jumping. If you look at GSDs from a century ago, they had normal, level toplines like other dogs and wolves. The best thing would be to return to that as soon as possible.
@pazrexthegermanshepherd47458 жыл бұрын
nothing was wrong with this dog. He was actually an excellent dog with perfect health, he lived a long life and was a titled working dog. If you looked closely he was actually much better than today's German showlines
@PlainsPup8 жыл бұрын
Rex German Shepherd No, canids are not supposed to have sloping backs like hyeanids. There are still fine working line German shepherds and other landrace German herding dogs, but all of those have normal, level backs, and not distorted toplines like this one.
@pazrexthegermanshepherd47458 жыл бұрын
***** this dog didn't have a disorted back like the ones from the bloodline today. Btw something I don't like is when people dont use the right terms to describe the dogs. This is not sloped it would be considered curved. A curve is not bad but a roach is and todays dogs unfortunetly do have roaches which is unhealthy. Plus I never said it was how they were suppose to look, just saying that this individual dog was great compared to other German Showlines.
@PlainsPup8 жыл бұрын
Paz & Rex the German Shepherd Yes, although I'm a biologist, sometimes I use slang terms to speak more plainly. You sacrifice some accuracy that way, but you appeal to a broader audience. Anyway, canids have had level top lines for 40 million years, and it's a big mistake to breed GSDs with curved croups, just like it's a big mistake to breed dogs with flat faces, droopy ears, long backs, deep wrinkles, etc. It's bad enough that most breeds are inbred, but breeding for freakish bodies adds another problem, and that is mechanical dysfunction. All dogs, be they stock dogs, sled dogs, guard dogs, or just pets, should have a normal canid body plan. Yes, there are sadly worse GSDs out there now than the one in this video. But if you look at the landrace and even purebred ancestors of GSDs like this one, you will see that their top lines are straight, and they are more agile and less prone to hip dysplasia because of that. Breeders should just keep domestic wolves (dogs) normal and stop messing around with them so much. They're not art, they're animals.

That ain't poetry in motion its a roach backed, low slung hipped, hock walking, abomination. Shame on GSD Show breeders for destroying this beautiful breed. Thank God Von Stephanitz can't see them now to see what you've done to them, he'd be ticked.

@reso1009 жыл бұрын
Lynette Watson Clueless... Sorry but had to say
@darlenemolina37838 жыл бұрын
+Lynette Watson The GSD was originally bred for herding and as each breed has its own unique way of herding livestock, so does the GSD. They are meant to be a moving fence line and able to gait all day long encircling the herd and keeping them in one general area. This means they need to have the type of movement that produces the greatest amount of space covered with the least amount of effort exerted. It's not about speed. It's about endurance.
@allfiner7 жыл бұрын
Lynette, GSDs were bred to be trotting dogs. Not runners or walkers, trotters. Their length allows them to cover a large distance with each step with little effort, and trotting allowed them to move herds over long distances, or constantly corral livestock in a defined area without tiring. That's their utilitarian purpose and that's what they were bred, created and designed to do. Before posting a comment, think. Try to reason things out. It's muscular dog and it trots...ask yourself why those traits would be intentionally bred into a herding dog required to move livestock ALL DAY LONG. If critical thinking isn't your thing, Google it, or go to the breed websites and read about why this animal does what it does. It's okay not to know something. It's not okay to bask in your ignorance than make uninformed comments online just because you can.
@muzaregne22093 жыл бұрын
@@allfiner this is not an efficient, economic trot though. your reasoning is fine but the end result should not look like this. See Dr Fischer's work.
@artiicom2 жыл бұрын
The GSD was bred for herding, more specifically tending (aka acting as a living fence, keeping stock in boundaries rather than gathering or moving them), and the flying trot as well as rear angulation was bred in to help the dogs cover the most amount of ground with the least amount of strides possible, saving energy and making for more efficient herding.

Why on earth did they start breeding German Shepherds with lower hip bones? It has nothing to do with the original one.
@sjsisjsjks5 жыл бұрын
In pursuit of the long stride trotting gait seen here.
@artiicom2 жыл бұрын
The hip bones aren't lower, but the croup does have more angulation. It helps the dogs cover more ground with the least amount of strides. More efficient when tending to sheep, which is this breeds original purpose. Older GSDs lacked this and bc of this, couldn't do their work as well as modern day dogs. They were bred for temperment rather than health and structure.
