I worked on the Lake Freighters and did this countless times. This ship is likely coming from Thunder Bay going to Montreal. We start the video on Lake Erie entering the Welland Canal at Port Colborne Ontario, Lock 8. From there through Dain City, Welland and Thorald, on to Lake Ontario off of St Catherines.

I just followed this ship's journey with Google Earth, following along with the video. That was fun, started at Gravelly Bay and ended at Sunset Beach, The Great Lakes are Great!

I was a boy rating on the MV gloxinia remember being lowered down on a bosuns chair to put the mooring ropes on in lay-by locks then taking them off when ready to move and sprinting to the next lock to casually hop on board brilliant times

I would imagine ships hate going through the Welland Canal since it must take so much time to do 27 miles. But without it there is no connection between Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence Seaway and the rest of the Great Lakes.

So why is there water being sprayed on the deck? How much does it cost to enter each lock? How long did it take to go through these locks? Does someone board prior to make sure everyone has there passport? What is the purpose of the yellow gate that drops down every time you reach the end of the lock prior to being lowered? why does the ship go left a little ways prior to entering the lock?
@Fritzsche-ki6gv

Yellow gate is now answered in description. Also when you work for the company…you need to have a passport…duh….it’s not a passenger ship

That is amazing! Some of those locks look like it is a matter of inches on both sides of the ship! Thanks for sharing this video!

This kind of a build amazes me..not just how they built it... but when..and how quickly. Here in Washington state a one mile section of Interstate 5 by the Tacoma Dome was just completed. (Year 2023) A lane widening project....that took 22 YEARS! More like a jobs program...real joke.

I recently learned that US Navy ships were built in Wisconsin and wondered how they got to the Atlantic Ocean. I was stumped on how ships went from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario until I learned of the Welland Canal and its locks. Thanks for the journey through them.

For 4 summers in the early 1970s I sailed with US Steel's Great Lakes Fleet as a college summer job. Almost always that entailed trips from MN to IL, IN or OH. The fleet did occasionally make a trip out the seaway to Trois -Rivieres (Three Rivers) Quebec to pick up a load of iron ore and I always hoped we would catch one of those trips but never did.

For us that don't live on the river. One nice additition to the video would be to identify the city's as the ship goes past them so we all know where it's at on the river. Thanks for view from the pilot house, I always wondered what the view is like.

Yes, 200 each way, you need to often call and not just arrive. It’s a lengthy process, your better off hitching the boat and driving across

no punn intended but that's a boatload of lochs there.. anyone know the elevation change in feet? holy smokes this ship must have done at least 300ft? 50ft each maybe? I'm from a 1 lock town seattle or ballard, cuz its salt water to fresh water, I think its s slight elevation change 22ft but mainly lochs out for tide changes and to keep the freshwater full in the ship canals.. but these lochs man these are for elevation changes like in the UK.. I guess they need it they go a long ways inland to these lakes form the ocean.. very cool, prolly sucks as a skipper tho, hurry up and wait.. ballard lochs can get backed up for sure, they take large vessels to row boats and canoes, 80x825ft .. how many are on this system?
