Most comments here focus on apathy amongst young voters, but young idealism is just as bad. Too many young voters will not vote for either party because they do not 100% agree with either, and those voters will not accept the "lesser of two evils" argument. I've heard some version of this said dozens of times over the years: "I agree with candidate X on 95% of issues, but since I do not agree 100%, I cannot support them".

The good news (watching this five years later) is that the people of some states have been making changes to address some of these problems - for example the interstate National Popular Vote compact, and ranked choice voting at state or local levels. The winner-take-all system is not just a problem for the Electoral College though; it’s also the direct result of single-seat congressional districting which is the root cause of gerrymandering. The fix for this is to abolish districting altogether and use multi-member proportional representation, which is something I don’t see talked about enough.

Once young people have a fascist dictator as their master some of them will feel differently. Unfortunately many will not. Fascism is in many way a paradise for the stupid people. Because the people we would have elected in 2022 wouldn't have been the ones in office between 2009 and 2011. Don't get me wrong, the Blue Dogs were idiots for standing against the keystone policy that ushered in a Democratic trifecta, but they were punished at the polls, often worse than the Democrats who supported ACA. That is democracy working, even though the Tea Partiers that temporarily replaced them weren't any better. Any policy that has ever been passed, you can say "why didn't [the party sponsoring it] pass it before?" The answer is, there has to be a first time for everything that happens at least once.

Our systems, use roberts rule of order for meetings. The systems are designed to be held accountable by people getting involved grass roots style. Unfortunately, since the nixon admin, the republican side gains their power, by convincing enough people that the government is corrupt, and it's not worth your time. The conservatives, are actually just wanting to be in full power unchecked. It's not actually about conservation of culture, way, belief. They use the church to make politicians, it's a fast lane to skip having an actual career, or making a name for yourself. You want to be involved in politics? but you don't want to work or contribute to society? Join a church, that's how you skip making a name for yourself. You now have the backs of every bible owning person in country, whether they know you at all or not. It's free blind faith votes in your corner. This election is about the churches wanting state power, and no federal intervention, vs just carrying on and being american. You can be american, or you can be an extreme maga cultist. Nice choices, nice election cycle, totally not held hostage 8 years by maga unlucko.

I really wish that you would have discussed some of the systemic issues that keep young people from voting. That’s such an important piece of this puzzle. For starters, it would be helpful if Election Day was a holiday every year and treated on the level of Christmas or Thanksgiving. Another idea is to make it so someone can have paid leave to vote. There are plenty of other ideas out there too.

Those won't work, because service business will not close, which generally employs younger people. And the government can't force a business to close. On top of that, it incentivizes conservative business owners to schedule young people to work anyway. We know exactly what to do: Congress needs to exercises their constitutional right to tell the states how to do voting, then mandate states use Oregon mail in voting system . Literally would solve all these voting issues.

OK, younger people, your vote counts. If you want your voice to count, get involved. It starts at the lowest levels of politics. If you don't want the levers of power controlled by scum-sucking corporate lackeys, vote for their opposition. If you want diversity, vote for the diverse. If you want the system to change, you have to get involved. Sitting back and complaining won't do anything. If you want the perfect candidate/policy/outcome, you'll never get them. Remember, the best is the enemy of the good, but the better is the enemy of the bad. Vote for better.

I wavered back and forth a bit on the topic, until finally coming to the idea that a majority should be able to implement their vision of government. At least, up to the point that involves the democratic processes themselves... using majoritarianism to cement your majority through rigging the democracy is not tenable. The rest though? The majority should be able to implement what they were voted in on, so that voters can clearly see what they voted for.
