You quickly showed the Watermark Book store, it was once one of the best book stores in the region. Wide selection of books and it had atmosphere.

I used to pick up Atlatle Points and Arrow Points in the feilds around the area when i was a kid. We Chopped Cotton in the summer so we were always out there, after a rain or a few days after they turn off the irrigation systems is always the best time to walk the rows. We found lots of the Poverty Point Objects that are on display, my cousins and i helped build the small overlook replica of the mounds one summer.

Fort Wayne is a beautiful little secret city, and we want to keep it that way.

I, too, was amazed at the vibrancy and history of Fort Wayne. The residents sure have a lot to proud of.

I went high school there for 4 years. Graduated in 1958. It seems like a long time ago in one way and then in another way it kinda seems like just a few years ago. Time really flys.

I've lived in Newton for 71 years. The building that is the 5/6 grade school was Santa Fe middle school in the 80's and was Newton Hi School before that when I graduated from there, You missed Historic Lindley Hall on the North side of this building. Next to Lindley Hall was the previous Santa Fe Jr. High School. You walked right by but missed Anderson;s Book Store in operation by the same family for over 125 years. Bethel College is in North Newton, not Newton. The old courthouse was where the new court house sits, it was never the sight of the Santa Fe Middle Division Offices. That building is at 5th and Oak diagonal from the carriage factory and is now used for Newton City Offices. The building South of the train engine was Axtell Christian Hospital. You missed the Warkentin home on first street and the Chisholm trail crossings. Good for you for catching the Carriage factory. My home was built by the same architect who built the depot. It is an Amtrac station that saw tens of thousands of troops go through in WWll. Beneath it are tunnels under the tracks and under main street to the West where the Railroad had a laundry. Much more about Newton's bloody cowboy days has been suppressed to shake the image it had. My family moved to the Newton area in 1874 just after Newton became a town. The old Carnegie Library just South of the Warkentin mill is now the home of the Historic Society. They could have been a great help to you, but you provide a decent introduction.

Wow - that's a lot of history in Newton! I'll have to check out all those places you mentioned. I plan on being back in the area this spring and will definetly check out and add these locations and history to my next video of the city. Thanks!

We'd park at the high end of town so we could walk downhill by the shops.
@WanderingWalksofWonder4 күн бұрын
Smart - I parked at the low end of down and walked to the top. It's quite the trek - but the buildings and scenery make it worthwhile.

I currently live in Onawa and it's a nice quiet town and I feel safe living here.The people are friendly but groceries are expensive due to the town only having one grocery store and nothing else close by.
@WanderingWalksofWonder4 күн бұрын
It is nice to hear about the friendly people in Onawa - I'll add that to my notes for the next time I'm there. I live in a small rural Missouri town and the grocery prices are the same. It's a 45 minute drive to the big city of Cape. We eat up more money in gas than paying the rates at our small town store if we drive there.

The Strang Line railway was gone before my time, but I remember the lumberyard in and around the old car barn. I'd collect treasure from their scrap bin, take it home and hammer things together. I built forts, bike ramps, treehouses - all kinds of fun.

@@WanderingWalksofWonder Yes, if you don't like the winter I can see it as a summer place. I moved to Arizona because I got tired of the winter. I still have very fond memories of the town. I last visited in 2023. It was very vibrant.
