@king-lao2964 She’s not an antagonist. Yes, Echidna is indirectly responsible for much of the plot, however she is not an antagonist. An antagonist is by definition an adversary to the hero and takes actions to impede their progress. Echidna actively helped Subaru multiple times, and didn’t do anything to stop Emilia from succeeding. Some of her students became antagonists (Ros and Al) as did a failed creation of hers (Sphinx), however other creations of hers have been allies (Betty, Puck, Eridna, the other Ryuzu clones), so she’s indirectly responsible for both positive and negative events in the story. She’s lawful neutral, not evil. Leaving Beatrice in the forbidden library wasn’t even cruel; we literally see the scene occur and it’s far tamer than what Subaru thinks happened. Dona was going up against an opponent she expected not to come back from fighting and wanted to keep Betty safe. We don’t know if this was about Satella, Volcanica, Hector, etc, however we do know that she never came back. Betty was supposed to choose someone to be “that person” for her, so that she could be happy (Echidna wasn’t even that vague about this point) yet she ended up not choosing anybody, including Toska who she was fond of. She was curious as to who Betty would pick, however the whole point of leaving her there in the first place was Beatrice’s own safety.

Just saying without Subaru or reinhard the re zero world would have literally died to puck or Sphinx Also the trial of the future being able to predict the future accurately to some degree doesn't even give her the excuse that what Sphinx has done for example being unforeseen accident. Also the dialogue she has in the arc 9 prologue and the side story "no Stella no life" also just scream "antagonist"

@@JB-fd8jy Echidna did help Subaru multiple times, and you are not only lying by omission but also deliberately misinterpreting the story through an extreme anti-Echidna lens. Firstly, Echidna never behaved like Emilia. That is your own personal assumption for which there is no actual evidence; Echidna is deeply afraid of Emilia and genuinely dislikes her, so behaving like her is not on her priority list. Echidna never once adopted Emilia’s speech patterns, she just talked like a bokukko, and her personality was absolutely nothing like Emilia’s. I never once had the impression while reading Arc 4 that she was “like Emilia” nor did the text push for such a notion. Secondly, Echidna did not go against Subaru at any point; she actively helped him like I said. Upon first meeting Subaru, Echidna activated his Witch Factor and helped him adapt to it. If not for this, Subaru would never develop Authorities other than RBD yet would suffer the negative consequences of possessing a Witch Factor. She allowed him to find some closure with his family in the First Trial, finally giving him some peace of mind for the first time in this world, something that no other character could have given him. She saved Subaru when his mind broke and he was eaten by rabbits, as well as when he was swallowed by the shadows of the Witch of Envy. She was the first person Subaru could tell about RBD, and she helped alleviate his suffering. She helped him by bestowing upon him knowledge that people had lost in the contemporary Re:Zero world, as well as find a way to defeat the Great Rabbit for good. After Subaru turned down Echidna’s contract, she accepted it happily and did not stop helping him; she gave him advice on how to get through to Garfiel, which was essential to saving everyone. She also removed his qualification to undergo the trials, as him doing it would break both his mind and Emilia’s. As for the infamous contract itself; Tappei has stated that Echidna does not lie, and has suggested that Echidna loves Subaru. This means that her speech was not a lie; she really does like Subaru and really did intend to help him. The consequences of the contract are seen in Kasaneru, and although Echidna’s greed and desire to view many possibilities did contribute to Subaru’s endless hell of looping; it’s also important to recognise that Subaru’s own greed was responsible for that outcome, as it’s his own sins which cause the if routes bearing the names of the deadly sins. Echidna, in fact, did not truly want Subaru to accept that contract, yet was curious as to what he would pick. She actively steered events in a direction where he would be less likely to accept her contract, as although she did genuinely wish to aid him, she also cared for his wellbeing and wanted him to succeed on his own. This is revealed in the chapter “After All The Guests Have Left” in Arc 4 by Minerva; it’s the Witch’s Tea Party that takes place immediately after Subaru and Satella leave the Castle of Dreams. Echidna’s motivations are paradoxical, yet fascinating and central to the theme of her character; after all, the answer to “Why Must Love Fade?” is greed, and through not keeping Subaru to herself she is exercising moderate love, ie one which will not fade. It’s a common misconception that Echidna was trying to force a contract with Subaru by any means necessary, and that Minerva selflessly saved Subaru; in reality Minnie is best friends with Echidna, and it was fully part of Echidna’s plan for Minerva to intervene. Puck is the Beast of the Apocalypse, however he is not a failed experiment of Echidna’s (unlike Sphinx). The actions of Echidna’s creations are their own, not hers, and although Sphinx’s actions can partly be blamed on her because Sphinx is not a fully rational being, the same cannot be said for Puck. His contract with Echidna specified that he is to observe Emilia from afar and not interact with her, else he will lose his memories. Puck destroying the world is within one of his contracts, however it’s unknown if it’s his contract with Emilia or Echidna (initially it’s implied to be Emilia’s). If Puck destroying the world is within his contract with Emilia, then it has very little to do with Echidna; conversely, if it’s part of his contract with Echidna, it confirms a piece of evidence from Subaru’s Second Trial. Within the trial, during the confrontation between Puck and Reinhard, it is stated by Puck that if he does not destroy the world “that girl cannot be saved”. Ergo this suggests that Puck is aware of Return by Death in concept, and he could only have gained such knowledge from Echidna. Puck destroying the world, if blamed on his contract with Echidna, is actually further evidence of her aiding Subaru, as although she may dislike Emilia, she is aware of her importance (and that a world without Emilia is a doomed one). Sphinx is actively characterised as Echidna’s regret, ever since she is first hinted towards in Arc 4. Roswaal is openly hostile towards Sphinx upon seeing her again in Ex 2, so she had always been an abberation that is detested by Echidna’s own close allies. The Trial of the Future draws on from the Tome of Wisdom in order to show multiple possible bad futures. Whilst Sphinx’s actions were certainly one of those possible futures seen in the trial, as evidenced by the Priscilla line “There, you see? I win again.”, that does not make Echidna complicit in those events. As a being that has witnessed countless possible futures through the Tome of Wisdom (although she hates using it because it bypasses the process of learning) it is unfair to blame her over a single of those bad possibilities becoming a reality in the true timeline. Finally, whilst I agree that Echidna appears quite ominous in the Aldebaran Prologue, that doesn’t change the fact she wasn’t an antagonist in Arc 4 or the fact that she (as Omega) is not an antagonist either, nor does it confirm that Echidna will become a villain. We already knew that her relationship with Al was negative and complicated, and from Tappei that she would have no interest in him should they “meet”. Conversely, there are numerous side stories where Echidna is unambiguously good, such as “Loving The Days Gone By”, and she was also that way in the backstory chapters in LN 14. She is a multifaceted character who is neither truly good, nor truly evil. She’s lawful neutral, and she was one of Flugel’s party who journeyed to save the world. Dona doesn’t deserve to be diminished.

Echidna is the antagonist of arc 4 because she opposes the idea of self love that becomes one of Subarus ideals. A villain and an antagonist are not the same thing. For instance Hank from breaking bad is the antagonist of Walt this does not mean he is morally corrupt and evil. Echidna is also very antagonistic to Emilia being frustrated at her ability to be satisfied
