I'm 99% positive he had genetic mental illness and it tends to hibernate until someone's late 20's to early 30's, then it hatches. In the beginning the psychotic behavior is maybe 1% of the time and 99% their normal self, but within 2 years they are in psychotic mode 99% of the time, 1% dangerously psychotic, and their normal self is extinct. Heavy drug use will amplify it or accelerate it, but when someone has genetic mental illness it's basically an alarm clock inside their brain set at 30 yrs and when it the time runs out a bomb goes off inside their brain and they can't help it or stop it.

Went brain dead. Lived with his mother last of his days. I’m sure he was having mental problems. Not sure really. You are born with these symptoms. U just don’t get them. But can elevate as life goes on.

*And just how do we know when this was recorded, apart from the clips heading - the truth is it could've been recorded at any date, it just gives it more impact to say it's IS his last 'known' recorded stuff. He was a talented guy that gave Pink Floyd the start for their amazing longevity. I think they'd be completely different if he'd stayed with them. Roger Waters wouldn't have taken the reigns, making their music the same as the first album (with obvious evolutionary changes). There'd be no Waters' opuses like DSOTM, Animals, The Wall or The Final Cut, it'd be Syd's faux psychedelic, nursery inspired stuff all the way, not deep psychological investigations a la Waters. Barrett was indeed a genius, but let's not soil his legacy with conjecture of recordings, madness, abuse or anything else. Let's just try to leave the music to speak for itself*

The part that Bob Geldoff played in the wall was loosely based on syd. I didn't realize it until many years later because it was never mentioned in the movie. I was puzzled watching the movie, wondering what the part that geldoff was portraying had to do with Pink Floyd. But then I found out about the demise of syd and it finally made sense.
