I remember in the early 90s I picked up Return to Metalopolis on cassette in the cut-out bin for a couple bucks and pretty much left it in my car's cassette player all the time. I thought it was great. I became a fan of Chris when I first bought Peace Sells in 86 or so

Terrific interview, good on Gary for pursuing his personal passions and interests. Although sometime in the future it would be awesome to see the band reconnect for a NWOBHM fest of some kind. Jaguar is and will always be an iconic NWOBHM band.

That song and the album suck. No one wants to hear new music from these old bands. Play the stuff from when they were popular cause that’s what people want to hear.

Chris and garr are misunderstood musicians.everyone takes about the heroin.chris kicked that habit right after megadeth.he looks great for his age.garr unfortunately still had demons and died young.i have no doubt Chris could take over guitar duties in Megadeth with no problem at all.garr is a total loss to the music world.chris looks like a middle aged man in this photo and has the chops to be in Megadeth today.his playing still sounds amazing and is better then the current lead guitarists including dave.dave should move on from this beef with Chris and he should be hired. If Chris wanted he could take over guitar duties with no problem.i think it would be amazing.dave m is not who people think he is.if Chris is happy with his life I wish him all the love he deserves.peace sells and killing is my business are the staples of megadeth.. every songs that can be played on those albums live are wake up dead and peace sells mecanix rattle head and that's about it.gars parts are hard asf.so are Chris Poland's solos. They probably play devil's Island bad omen and that's about it.

Nah, I shit on Ghost because they use extensive pre-recording live, and the front man lives up his own ass. Dude is just such a fucking tool and his lyrics are brain dead pop tier. There's some good tracks, but his music is all ghost written anyway. He's like the Taylor Swift of metal. Opeth, Disillusion, Hypocrisy, Aephanemer, Flesh God Apocalypse, compare Ghost to any band with an ounce of creative integrity, and it's no contest. People who listen exclusively to top 40 don't actually like music, they like the social currency of associating themselves with shit that is popular.

The problem today is that everything that has a guitar in it, it is called metal. About gatekeeping - I met you some young people and conversation turned about music that we listen. I proudly said that I am an old metalhead, and to my surprise, I got an answer "we are metalheads as well" (one could not have guessed by their looks - clean shaven, short hair, commonly dressed etc.). "Oh that's awesome" I said --- "....so what are your favorite bands?" - The reply was, Vail of Maya (band), Tool and some other progressive rock. "Oh...." I paused for a sec, ..." well I prefer older genres - up to black metal (was never fan of BM)" , to which I got the reply...."well, yeah, we never listened to any of that". I just realized that I have nothing in common with those people (music wise) despite all of us called ourselves metalheads. For me being metalhead is...to breathe and to live heavy metal culture and I consider metalheads anyone with whom, I can talk about for hours about it.

you ever see those internet videos where someone walks into a room and sees a box of doughnuts. they then proceed to pull out this super good looking boston cream, and bite into it only to discover its actually filled with mayo. thats what discovering the band ghost is like.

You know what's funny? Overwhelmingly there are more people concerned about "fighting" gatekeeping than there are actual gatekeepers. Reminds me of liberals "fighting" racism.

Its not gatekeeping with Ghost. They are just trash. I do not trash on any band other than Ghost. This is the only band i will trash. They are not good. They're the least talented band to find the most success. I don't feel bad for saying this. Genre doesn't matter. Their genre is simply just "Bad Music"

Ghost is like Tool to me... it got a little too LARGE in music scope. But I love Ghost, and any metalhead who thinks they aren't fucking awesome is out of their minds! Ghost has brought me to tears of musical ecstasy many many times. And I saw them live at the Boston House of Blues before they popped. It was a wonderful moment for those few years for me! Always cherished.

I theorize people call Blood Incantation "hipster" in part because of the technical progressive elements in their compostion, but more due to how they are treated online and how the members of the band act, specially Paul Riedl. Like go watch their Amoeba what's in my bag to see how it's almost his whole vibe. That aside, my main criticism with the band is the lack originality. Not that they don't have original riffs, I mean they copy very specific things that sometimes isn't even in composition. In the first album the Timeghoul inspiration was ok, but then for the second they copy one of Agony's album covers and end it on a 20 min. song like Agony in LIFE. And for the latest they made a psychedelic rock infusion with a super long ending piece divided exactly in 3 movements, just like Venenum did on Trance of Death. They're things that at first feel like coincidences but they are far too specific and frequent to be so.

When it comes to visual appearance and esthetic of a band, it shouldn't be out of context from what said band sounds like. Kiss for example, specifically Gene Simmons, had borderline Proto Corpse paint, they had fire at their shows and he would spit blood for whatever reason. And yet their songs sounded like the most mediocre 70's pop rock you could find. The look didnt fit the sound whatsoever. Then take a band like Dimmu Borgir or other Black Metal acts, the sound matches the esthetic perfectly. So much so, alot of pop clowns have tried to copy both the visuals, the ambience and some of the sound. I think what people dont like is what it comes across as disingenuous, like a gimmick, a way to prop up a poor product. The product is in fact the audio, people buy records (however the medium used) to listen to. If the Wiggles all the sudden started wearing "gothic" outfits with corpsepaint, inverted crosses, and pretending to do rituals on stage, while playing the exact same style they already play and the same songs, would you take them seriously? Same for if Sam Smith did it, (oh wait, he kinda did with his more recent devil costumes). Its basically cultural appropriation, and although not illegal, anyone can do whatever they want, people are also allowed to see through it, and even despise it. Same can be said for "Baby metal" they are appropriating metal culture, repackaging it with little girls and marketing it to incel anime collectors. Not sure why your podcast was on my recommended, but thought I'd give my honest 2 cents.

Really enjoyed your talk, thanks. Subscribed. A few thoughts: as a teenager I took metal pretty seriously, or rather I didn't take anything seriously that wasn't "true" (okay, not in the sense of Manowar, who I always found totally cringe). But over time I've become more relaxed and I've developed my own perspective, because I have to admit that a good song is always a good song, no matter what genre. KZbin in particular, with all its mashups and cover versions, has taught me a lot. I have to admit that a Rammstein song in the Klezmer version or a metal-soul mashup with Black Sabbath and the Temptations works surprisingly well (but as a Mother's Finest fan I somehow always felt that long before!). I can understand the thing with Ghost very well, because at first I also thought they were trying to fool me. Sometimes they are terribly "poppy". But that also happened to me with the Phenomena project or with Volbeat. But: See above, a good song is a good song. At the end of the day, it's the sound or the timbre, personal taste or a question of character. I just wonder where the aversion to harmonies or melodies comes from... Speaking of Volbeat: When Volbeat were still called Dominus and did something between doom and black metal, they had a song intro with the Elvis quote ("Rock and Roll is basically gospel and rhythm and blues"). Nothing could be more "true" in metal...
