GOD I LOVE DON MCLEAN SO MUCH -- THIS SONG IN PARTICULAR. It does something to my brain chemistry. Honestly. It transports me into another world. It makes me feel like he's right there, singing, with bright colors swirling in the air and then suddenly I'm in a field with flowers, grass, and sunny skies and GOD it just transports me into another world.

Don has always followed his own path….possibly to his detriment….but in my opinion, he is severely underrated as a song-writer, and vocalist….a true artist!

Along with 'It's Just The Sun', this is one of my all time favourite DM songs. Sung to perfection with searing vocals, it's difficult to believe there's no orchestra, it's just Don and his guitar, truly a commanding and intimate performance. Thank you for posting this video, I was mesmerized, really enjoyed it.

one of the greatest singers ever...at this stage in his life
@TheJewellian7 ай бұрын
With all his success he was still a very underrated singer and musician and writer, his vocal range and intonation was flawless and his guitar playing better than most other singer songwriters of the period. He changes the melody slightly each time he sings his songs and it is always done in a very complex and musical way.

How on earth can he be out of sync with himself in the 1st verse of castles in the air?. His vocal is 1 bar behind his guitar. Utterly bizarre, utterly brilliant :)

The tune he opens with is Pete Seeger's "livin' in the Country" also played by Leo Kottke.

For those interested, he is playing a Martin 000-28 twelve fret, which he favoured in the early years. He owned two of them....a 1928 and a 1929. Both were phenomenal golden era Martins...about as good as they get and perfect fingerpicking guitars. He also played a couple of very fine vintage Martin 00-21's but all his guitars were eclipsed by those legendary 000-28's. The song is in dropped D tuning by the way.

Great song from Don, I had the vinyl p f tie. When my parents went off at the weekend, I cranked up the record player to near the top sung this with him at the top of my voice. Not sure if the neighbours liked it or not. Didn’t care!!! Naughty teenager!!!!!!!!😊🎉😮
