In 1994 I had a family holiday in Serbia and Montenegro. During the 1990's it was a depressing time for the country and the Serbian people. This had a negative effect on how the holiday panned out. Before returning home to the UK I said that I will never again go to Serbia. 28 years later family friends in Belgrade invited me to a wedding. I went and spent 8 days in Belgrade and visited a few other places in Serbia. In October it will be my 8th visit in two years. There is no other city like Belgrade. Safe, clean, friendly locals, amazing tourist attractions, classy shopping centres, quality restaurants and "kafanas" (the equivalent of a traditional English pub), great entertainment and all of it friendly on the wallet. If ever you go to Serbia you will want to go there again. It attracts you like a magnet!

Dude, the legend of Big Kristaps/Kristaps the Great has nothing to do with Aglona. He was (supposedly) a ferryman across the Daugava river, and got nicknamed "the Great" simply because he would go far beyond his duties as a ferryman to ensure people, and especially children, would get safely across the river, no matter the weather conditions. Storms, blizzards, he didn't care. Some claim he was actually an absolute unit of a man, and could wade across Daugava, carrying children on his shoulders. (Obviously not true because Daugava is way too deep for that. Then again, it's possible that, being a professional ferryman, he simply knew where the fords and shallows were.) The Catholic church is not very popular in Latvia, as opposed to Lithuania. Christianity, as a whole, brought us nothing but 800 years of brutal subjugation and oppression. Same for Estonia, our Northern cousins.
