I was proficient with a sling when young. I made mine out of leather boot laces and a soft leather pouch with a few holes to help secure the rocks.

"Throw it like a baseball" - and that should suddenly make everything obvious. Oh, Americans! I love the technique and simplicity of the design of this sling though. I stumbled on this video looking for some synthetic materials as a replacement for leather. After all we are living in 21st century - leather is not mandatory, We should have other options in the plastic era. And leather is unnecessarily expensive. Plastic materials will do well too.

if you drilled your top holes with the bit at 45 degrees horizontal and 45 degrees vertical, would it create a vortex with the flame?

For drilling sheet metal, a step drill bit and de-burring tool will make life easier for you. Step drill bits help keep the bit from grabbing when it breaks through and marring the hole, and the de-burring tool will take care of the metal shards. Step bits leave less shards as well and can themselves be used to de-burr.

I enjoyed the video but I think you'd have better accuracy and more power if you start the swing behind you, with your body aligned sideways to your target, instead of swinging on the side of your body. Swinging the sling on the side looks (and to me it feels very) unnatural. The reason, I think, the "baseball" swing works better for you is because you're projectile is coming from behind. Do the same with the side swing and you should find it improves your throwing. Also check out Archaic Arms, he has some videos about how to use them as well. Best of luck!
