Great interview. Glad it made your top 3 days on the bike! Way to get it done. Thanks for racing and covering the race. Come back next year and we’ll give you a dry race for a change (hopefully)! No kayak required. - Mark (race director)

Good pod, Au GREY is how you say it if you wanna sound like a local. Conditions where absolutely brutal, had alot of the same issues and ended up wearing straight through my pads and backing plates hahah. Maximum rolling resistance. The flooded seasonal roads where absurd but really fun. Ended up rolling in around 10:30 during that storm tapering off. Anyone who finished is a beast.

Au Grey. Got it. Congrats on the finish.

Haha! Welcome to Michigan gravel! Manistee National Forest is a beast to be appreciated. A friend from Overland Park also came up for a Michigan sand bath. Fred Flintstoning is a required MI gravel riding skills!

Had a blast. Had ridden around by my dad’s house (in Manistee) a few times in the past, but 204 miles in those conditions was a different. Enjoyed it.

2014 - somewhat hot and a bit windy. 2015 - the Mud Year Pt1. 2016 - very hot. 2017 - perfect weather. And again 2024 - super perfect weather. I did the XL and we had a tailwind pushing us north. Then the wind shifted and pushed us west. Maybe we had a very slight headwind in the last 50 miles on Saturday. And talk about the rain. Thursday rain went south of Emporia and North of I70. Missed the course entirely. Friday, big storms just off to the east, just hanging there, about 5 miles East of the course, but not on the course. Saturday no rain. Friday was cloudy and dark skies, but no heat. Friday night was perfect temps, with maybe just 90 minutes of fog in the early morning. Then Saturday morning was cool. Only a slight bit of heat on Saturday afternoon. It is hard to think of better weather than what we had for the XL. The course was so dry and fast. We had only one MMR where mud was even a slight concern. Perfect, perfect, perfect.
@mattkretchmar63747 ай бұрын
Thanks guys for paying homage to the weather gods for us. Couldn't have asked for more perfect conditions for the XL. That was one of my favorite gravel racing courses of all time. The variety. The level of difficulty. The scenery. Made all the more pleasant by very little mud. Mostly light tailwind. And very little heat. 8 days out and I am already forgetting the pain and replacing it with only fond memories.

If you take a bike, pull the group set off and go for a ride it will be the same as riding Unbound without the two in the video along with others like them. QC is as important to some as the XL is to you.

Most people don't understand Kansas weather and how extreme it can be. Our rain gauge has to be pretty full for it to be considered heavy. You should do a video on the weather, how to read the clouds, and what equals extremes.

The 110 miles we rode that day took us just over 8 hours of moving time. Idk what it was with stop time figured in (shooting video, refueling at two gas stations, pulling over for large tractors & emergency vehicles.

@mattkretchmar63748 ай бұрын
That was super helpful. You guys are totally awesome. Big thank you for being guinea pigs for the rest of us schmucks. I was surprised by how much "nicer" it looked than what I expected. "Relentless onslaught of rocky goat paths" was a recent description. This doesn't look nearly that bad. Is the 200 route significantly worse or just more of about the same (with maybe a few rough sections thrown in)? Is the 350 route significantly worse, or again, just more of the same kind of thing? I have a choice between my Lauf with 40mm rubber and my Ti adventure bike with 2.2" rubber. The lauf is significantly faster but I was worried the XL course would beat up my tiny 40mm tires.
@Ministerofgravel8 ай бұрын
Both courses 200 & XL get progressively worse. Also, we filmed most of this on iPhones and hand held GoPro. So there’s some roads that were a bit too rough for us to hold onto the bike and the camera at the same time. 200, gets further north and further remote. XL finds every “road” and sends you down it.
