A thought that ocourred to me durring this was maybe have a scenario where the deffender has one unit ready and on watch, and the other units prone to repersent being relaxed. Maybe have a small deffender deployment zone, with the watch unit being able to deploy an additional X" forward. Boats honestly makes most sense for landing, as that is what you would use anyway. Rarely going to sail even a sloop right up to the docks and hop off. That said, the forward facing barco cannons could be interesting. One semi amphibous game I did last summer of plunder was everyone in boats, had a sea map with some islands, and had the objective to be to snag the cache of supplies off the middle island. essentially both sides race to the islands, run up, do a fight to get to the middle, then do a fighting retreat. I feel I had a penalty for moving supplies, like models carrying them don't count for shooting, but I forget.

Another great informational video on an uncommon historical commander. I have the figure, but don't think I ever played him in a game. Quirky question about his head gear...is that accurate? It looks so out of scale. Thanks again and really enjoy your battle report videos...very inspiring!

Well, the saves in the open makes more sense to me. While most of our boards are flat with open areas, real life there would be dead ground for people to hide in and likely tall grass etc. Also I like it for regulars to feel more willing to fight in formation. Firepots may be interesting. I could see Spanish and other big ruthless users adding them to their units.

Oh man...what perfect timing for this video! You guys really nailed down the quirky things to take into consideration for running a multi-player game. I'm running a nice one this Saturday for my 15th Annual BIG B-Day Pirate Game! I took a lot of notes that I haven't considers for game play; Strike Points, Strike Tests, Fortune Coins and Command Points. I heard you mentioned the "Subordinate" trait for a commander in Army Scale...did a quick pdf search and only found one Historical charter which had that....are there more? If so, I would like to add one for each side. Thanks again for the very informative video. Oh, hell...wait wait...looking forward to the next expansion...sounds awesome! Take care.

My wish list for Summer of Plunder kit models in order of desire are drummer boy, musician, son of Neptune/boatswain. My theory with a son of Neptune/boatswain model is that they could be used as that type of fighting man or if you are not using them, be a cool looking sailor model (much as my master gunner can just be regular gun crew).

I was also pondering in my head if it would be worth putting a unit of muskets on your allies ship, so if yours sinks you still can plink at the enemy.

I like Brethern, very adaptable and excellent theming/history. However I like English Buccaneers as well for the same reason, but I get forlorn hope as core, making for a well armed commander with excellent chance to pass a strike test. Also getting freebooters, veteran freebooters, and sea dogs as core (as well as kapers who are not coming with me) means I can make an adaptable land or sea force without even touching support options, so I don't have to worry about who to take. They also have some fun support options from French and Dutch lists, as well as musket warriors and English militia to widen your options even further. You loose the free grapeshot trade and the varriable experience rules, but still get a healthy list of commanders. Good option for a "pick one faction and we are playing both land and sea games with it" campaign or escalation league. There is a push to pardon Kidd, because while not a good guy, he was less a pirate and more a pollitical scape goat. He was given a contract with a really dodgy set of instructions (that made him not overly competitive for hiring a crew), got screwed over right at the hop (as most of his experienced crew was taken from him), then got unlucky later (lack of pirates to hunt when he got to his destination), and finally was left as the only one with no chair when the pollitical music stopped and people either feigned no connection to him or straight up lied about his activities. His trial was a mess, not giving him the ability to get his evidence prior to trial, then hammering him for not being prepared and having it when trial started (he had some pretty good I am not guilty evidence they did not want showing up).

"Giving these guys tough really makes them good." Me: *Laughs in British* My buddy has only played land games so far, and he plays Dutch. They are good, but our last game he suffered as I used New England militia to move up blocking access to one objective and leaving another one not secured, but in my firing line for a couple of units of Indian fighters. Elusive and tough made it so he was just unable to shift those guys, and scouts made sure I could get to where I needed to be to dictate the battle. French are brutal for having fast moving bush units that can dictate where and how the battle will be fought, but I like the British staying power. I look forward to when B&P gets to the Seven Year War, especially the North American theatre

I would suggest, and can't remember if I added this into the feedback form, but maybe have a video Discord meet with all the captains/1st Mates and organizers to discuss the upcoming campaign say 6moths before the event. @billk59154 ай бұрын
Thanks for running the event. Towards the end, you discuss the competition between nations and some criticism of it. I rate that aspect of the event a complete fail as a non-insider and would encourage you to scrap it entirely. It may have been fun or interesting for organizers and nation leaders, but it wasn’t fun, entertaining, or inclusive to me, or presumably to a number of other players. The vast majority of players had nothing to do with this aspect of the game, and your explanation of how it all worked just seemed pointless. It doesn’t need to be tweaked or optimized. It should be dropped. “It’s hard to make 170 people coordinate on a big event.” Right-it’s hard, and it didn’t succeed. So move on and try something different, simpler, and with more chance of succeeding.

I'm sorry that part of the campaign didn't do anything for you and we see that it wasn't important for some players. That said, it was enjoyed by many! We realize this can't be the perfect event for every player. Happy to take this conversation to email if you would rather use our contact page on the blog. Do you mind if I ask a couple questions to better understand your perspective? 1. Did you read the campaign rules? Or did the national competition just not appeal to you at all? 2. Did you join the Discord channel for the campaign? That's where most of the player and player/commander interaction happened. 3. Did the national mini game detract from your experience, or was it something you could just ignore? 4. What part of the campaign was enjoyable for you?
@billk59154 ай бұрын
@@bloodpigment5808 1. Yes, I read the rules. I honestly don't remember what they said about the national competition, but I was surprised when I started entering game results and there wasn't even a tally of who won or lost. The national competition didn't interest me because I didn't really feel like I was taking part in it. If I'd felt included, it would have interested me more. If I'd been taking part in any of the decisions being made, maybe the rules would have registered with me more. I think the full answer is "I read the rules at the start, they didn't seem to apply to me, so I promptly forgot about them, and nothing during the course of the campaign changed that." 2. I joined the Discord channel, but I didn't revisit it. I'm not a big fan of the Discord format, and though I'm a member of scores of channels, I really don't spend much time there. The whole "15 random conversations happening simultaneously" aspect of Discord just doesn't appeal to me. I prefer formats where questions and answers are organized sequentially, and different threads are kept separate. Also, I wound up playing English in every game, but that was somewhat random. I'm not sure I even checked out the specific English Discord channel, because I didn't know I'd be playing English when I first logged into the Discord, and I never returned to the Discord channel after that initial visit, which reinforced my general distaste for Discord. I introduced the game to a few new players, and I always gave them the choice of which nation they wanted to play. Then, we each stuck with our nation for the remainder of the games we played. So I was English, but I could have been multiple factions if that's what the new players had wanted. Given that players could play for multiple nations throughout the campaign, the individual Discord channels seemed a bit odd. Also, all the other campaign information was on the website and/or in emails. The national conversations were the only element of the campaign that required logging into Discord and sifting through all the chaff there. So I just didn't bother with them. The faction email updates really didn't seem like a conversation, they were just reports of results that didn't mean anything to me because they seemed like a different game that a select few insiders were playing alongside the large campaign. 3. Yes, the national mini game distracted from my experience. The weekly scenarios and goals were fun, but the realization that they were essentially meaningless, and there was a different game being played by insiders, and that's what all the updates were reporting, made the overall experience worse for me. It didn't actually feel like I was part of a campaign, and I eventually didn't even bother reading the email updates. My games themselves were fun, but that's where it ended for me. 4. The games themselves were fun, and it was fun trying out the different objectives each week. Also, I've used the multiplayer scenario from the campaign book, which arrived too late to actually use during the campaign, to run demo games, and it's great for that. Overall, I really appreciate the effort that you've all put into the Summer of Plunder, and I was finally motivated after a few summers of meaning to take part to actually play some regular games and report the results. I had fun, and that's because you organized the whole thing. So please don't take this as pure negativity. But you asked for feedback, and it sounded like I wasn't alone in finding the national campaign itself a bit of a dud. I think it was fun for the organizers and the national commanders, and those are the voices closest to you, so you may not realize how much it failed to engage the rest of us--certainly me, presumably others. In your video, that's how it sounded--you seemed surprised to have heard from players that didn't find it engaging, and it seemed like you felt that the failure was on our part. "Did you read the campaign rules?" certainly sounds like you think it's my fault for not being enamored of the campaign. I'm suggesting that you rethink that, and try to find a way for all players to feel like the games they played actually had some bearing on the overall campaign. Or just drop the idea of an overall campaign, and focus on the fun weekly scenarios for people to try out. But a mini strategy game among a handful of organizers that is tangentially related to the games played by a few hundred others really didn't seem like a successful multiplayer campaign to me.
