I prefer using the hook, always works and less likely to snap the string than the awl I feel. I also found Li Ning's double grommets are a lot friendlier to push the cross string through than the Yonex grommets.

To see whether the string is moving in the clamp better, you should mark the string on the other side of the clamp (the side not being pulled from). When the mark is on the same side as the tensioner, the mark always moves because the string stretches. You could also mark the string in between the teeth to see if part of the string is moving.

Why are you using floating clamps when you have fixed clamps? Surely the tension would be better using fixed clamps.

Thank you for this. I have a Pro’s Pro stringing machine like this but it is the crank version and not the electronic version. This was very helpful. I have a couple of Babolat starting clamps. Can I ask, would these be just as good?
