Wonderful films. It’s good to see people actually swimming in the sea. Never see it nowadays.

You have to wonder why it was deemed so important to knock down all the sea bathing lake structures. I was hoping for a glimpse of the Winter Gardens in 1934. Or was that too late?

Just watched this and it bought back some memories from my time in Staffs Police having attended and passed the Standar, Advanced and Instructors motor cycle courses and subsequently enjoyed patrolling the county on a then new Triumph Saint.Other Police driver training centres were mentioned but Im sure Staffs was not mentioned and surely we still had one in the early to mid 70s?

Hi Ian, I saw this video a few years ago and forgot to save it at the time when browsing the internet. I have been searching for it again for the last month and nearly thought I had imagined it! Myself and my family are the current owners of Wood Hall having moved in a few months ago now. I am in the process of starting to unravel the history of this house and also hope to document the changes over the years. I wonder if you might have any other content pictures or videos that might have the house in them even as a backdrop? Especially internal pictures or maybe you have some stories to share? I'm not sure if you still live in the area or even if you are still checking this channel but if you are it would be great to talk to you. Thanks, Atilla

The film shows the history of the house when my Father brought.it and shows the bad state the house was in. Sadly part of the grounds were sold for building long after my Father left.

Yes! Things were very bad in Cardiff in winter of 1947. To get out of our house my Father had to dig through 6 feet of snow. My sister who was in the WRNS took hours to walk to the Cardiff Docks for duty. Water pipes were frozen etc. No good complaining as all in the same boat!

I was born on the 20th of January that winter, in my grandparents' house because the ambulance couldn't get up the hill due to the conditions! Like you, I served in the RAF (1963-1987).

Such simpler, happy times they were, back in the 1970's. Spent many a happy day out, in the summer, at Southport back then. You wouldn't believe that it is the same place now. So sad how it was ruined.

You are experiencing a common phenomenon that has afflicted aging people since we were running round in loin cloths. You dont miss the way things were - you just miss your own youth. The old men in those clips from 1970s southport will have been pining for the 1930s, and no doubt the old men in those clips from 1930s Southport will have been pining for the Victorian days.

My fathers first cousin died in the the snows of 1947. He lived a few miles from Ardee (a small town in the County of Louth in Ireland) and was on his way home from the town when he got caught in a snow blizzard. They found his body the next day in the field in front of his house. It seems he got disoriented and couldn’t find his way out of the field. My parents would talk about the huge drifts of snow in some instances almost covering the houses.

I was born in Halifax in 1948 so don't remember this but I do remember the winter of 1963 which was as bad. I had a morning paper round, I lived on Baines Street and can remember opening the front door, the snow had drifted to the full height of the door and fell in. It was the one time my dog didn't come with me, she dived out as usual, was buried and ran straight back in. Like all the other paperboys I did the full round every day during the white-out. I was based at Mr Grayson's paper shop at the bottom of Battinson Road, anyone remember it? I went to Trinity Secondary, anyone else there around that time?

Thank you so much for putting that together. Seen so much I remember and how it used to be such a lovely family town.. Good clean fun. Wish people still wanted that.. it would be wonderful to have a place like that now. A bit of our tradition saved so that young kids (and old) could enjoy it too. Thanks for bringing back the memories though! All the best, J x
