My dad served on the Newport News in the 50's. He was so proud when it was activated for service in Vietnam. When he was terminally ill, all I could get him to talk about was his time in the navy. After seeing this footage I see why.

My son and I slept on-board overnight in the aft birthing area when he was a scout. The next morning we split from the group and climbed up the outer later to the bridge even through it was off-limits. Found an old radar manual but left it in place the ship was great to explore located in Quincy Harbor MA. Models of it are now available which some of the $$ keeps the restoration going.

She and her two sisters Salem and Des Moines were the baddest gunslingers the USN ever commissioned, they could put more metal in the air faster than anything before or since… with deadly accuracy.

@Dexter Goad, my grandfather was on that ship from 1963-1967. His name was Roy Savoy. 2nd fleet, petty officer 3rd class or something like that. I wish he was around so I could ask him, he passed 2 years ago. But he was on the USS Newport and his father, my great grandfather was on the USS Murphy in WWII. Great video.

It was an honor to work aboard her sister ship back in 2002 restoring her and installing and dedicating the memorial to all of the fallen along side my father who served with all of them and was there during that tragic time and helped recover his fallen brothers. They will Never be forgotten and I will forever be grateful for their service and sacrifice

When I was a boy in Mobile, Al. The NewPort News came to Mobile, Al for Mardi Gras in 1965. I never forgot that ship. I always wanted to sail on her. But I went to airborne school and served with the 101st airborne in 1972. I never forgot the Newport News. My daddy was a naval person. He made 13 beachheads and got chopped up in Bougainville. My daddy toured me on the NewPort News when I was 12 years old. I loved that ship and I loved my daddy too

As a retired Senior Chief Operations Specialist (OSCS), I have run hundreds of simulated runs and actual firings at Ille de Vieques, Bloodsworth Island and off of San Diego throughout my 22 years of service. I even spent a week off of Beirut for possible actual missions which we never fired. I stood the following positions in CIC (Combat Information Center) - North Plotter, South Plotter, AGLO (Assistant Gun Liaison Officer) and GLO. I never once got to see the rounds land on target, but this video cleared all of that up. Thank you for posting it.

Was an EM3 on USS Myles C Fox DD829 and in 72 we got sent to Vietnam only there 2 months. We were on a cruise in the Indian ocean and got orders to proceed at best speed. During May and June 1972 we put out over 4,000 rd's of 5".

That averages out to about 67 rounds per day, all on target, no bracketing shots. ☺

The producers did well to use the British ships that were as close to the originals, and I believe 2 even were. Since the Germans did try to make the Graf Spee look like a US cruiser in silhouette one can accept the use of the USS Salem. They probably should not have shown as much of the stern and tried to make turret B look false. When the "Spee's" guns were fired in the film only turret A should have been shown firing. And a flip of the film could have been used to simulate the rear turret firing. You have to use what you got. There were WW2 British cruisers available when the film was made, but there were no WW2 Panzerschiffe around.
