Hey Scott, do you know any good stickbaiting spots in auckland on land? Please ❤
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches5 күн бұрын
Not really sorry it can be very hit and miss as to where they swim past and when. Takatu Point would be my best suggestion.

Hi, do you think 200m of pe8 will do for stickbaiting of rocks or should it be minimum 250m line.
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches7 күн бұрын
You would be ok with 200M PE8 if your target species is kingfish and you go hard on the drag as soon as the fish hits. If its not expensive PE8 line (say it breaks under near 100lb) then It maybe worth looking at high quality PE6 line that breaks at 100lb eg Shimano Ocea X8.
@sharonjoseph45327 күн бұрын
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches thanks. Yes Kingfish is the target species. I was planning on purchasing the twin power in 14000 size and it takes around 200 meter of pe8. The reason I wanted to go pe8 is mainly because of the rocky terrain.

I have a 14000 sized Shimano spheros reel is it too small to fish PE8? Thanks
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches2 ай бұрын
I think it will depend on a number of factors. You will fit about 240-260yds of PE8 line on it which is fine depending on the species - it will handle small-mid size (15-20kg) kingfish and other game fish of similar size. The reel has a max drag of 12kg so its working drag is going to be about 10kg which doesnt really maximise what you can get out of PE 8/100lb line. Trying to fish it at 11-12kg most the time is a bad idea, as this is not the kind of pressure the reel is designed to handle so it will likely fail. If you want to spool PE8 because of its abrasion resistance and fish it at 8-10kg of drag then it will be suitable for fish up to about 20kg.

Hey I am heading to Spirits Bay with some friends in Jan. I usually only surfcast from the beach, is that possible at Spirits Bay or is it just rock fishing? Also how long was the walk to get to this spot?
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches3 ай бұрын
The beach fishing at Spirits is also pretty good - look for gutters and holes etc at low tide and fish when the tide rises (theres a lot of beach to explore). The other spot worth walking into is twilight beach at Cape Reinga - walk to the west down the track - its a 30-40 min walk down and 1.5hr back up walk but the surfcasting is good there. This spot at Spirits is about a 20 min walk - best to walk in from mid to low tide or get wet crossing the small gutter along the rocks.

Great video. Do you still favour mono over braid around the rocks?
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches4 ай бұрын
yeah usually, I switch to 15kg mono when Im fishing for the big boys as it is more abrasion resistant....

Im coming up that way for a week. Hows the rick fishing this time of year up there? Staying in russell
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches4 ай бұрын
Um think you made a typo - 'rick fishing' do you mean stick baiting? Its almost spring so its starting to heat up but spring fishing can also be very hot and cold so no guarantees....you could have an awesome day or a nothing day. You could go on a charter - I would recommend Darren Knapping, he knows his stuff. www.fishingchartersbayofislands.com/

Reminds me of my first Kingi on a stick bait- caught by the green marker buoy by the Brothers one fine morning. Solo, ended up taking wraps of leader to boat it. Great fun, beautiful fish.

My 2 cents on smoking. After similar brining as you do (2-3 days in the frig) I dry the fish on racks in the refrigerator for 24 hrs. For a dryer jerky style of smoked fish I cut the portions & freeze then thaw b4 brine. Smoking in a weber - it worked far better than my new traeger smoker which takes about 3 times as long (now for sale). I followed a fishing buddies advice & laid charcoal in a lg ring like fallen dominos on the grate. Light 1 end then it burns slow & low 1 briquette at a time perfect for low temp fish smoking. I use water soaked alder chips for king salmon & arrage them alongside my "domino ring" of briquettes once briquettes are burning. Cover & close all vents as much as possible without extinguishing it. In this way I get full smoked flavor in as little as 1 hr to 1 1/2 hrs & a well dried product full of flavor. I usually only use 3 lg handfuls of chips (the larger chips not the sawdust or pellets) Once smoked, the racks go in refrigerator full till cold then fish very carefully removed & vacuum sealed- awesome for friends, the mailman, garbageman etc. Meant to be shared😊.

Balloons I recently bought say biodegradable. I was assuming that makes them safer for animals but not sure how long it takes to degrade.
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches7 ай бұрын
yeah hopefully that is the case, I have heard of the biodegradable balloons but have also heard conflicting info about how 'biodegradable' they actually are. I guess more biodegradable than plastic.....

What has the moon phases got to do with tieds.
@DIGITALFISHContentthatcatches10 ай бұрын
The tides are controlled mostly by the moon phases (full moon, new moon etc). Here is a link to the science (National Geographic) education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/cause-effect-tides/ 'Forces that contribute to tides are called tidal constituents. The Earth’s rotation is a tidal constituent. The major tidal constituent is the moon’s gravitational pull on the Earth. '
