50 years ago I heard this piece played on a Steinway by a concert pianist. It was a solo performance. The way he played it was not especially enjoyable. In fact after hearing it I dismissed this piece as unworthy of performance. The performer in question had played Debussy, Chopin, Beethoven and Liszt concerts that I attended and I enjoyed all but his Ravel I did not and he led with this piece and I actually got up and walked out along with my family. I was 14 and no it was not a dislike for Classical. I was raised on Beethoven sharing my birthday with his. Tonight I randomly saw this video in my feed and had intended to simply come here and without bothering to listen to this piece, dismiss it as unworthy of making a video and question the judgement of whoever decided to post it here. But that is not what happened. The second after I clicked on the link to this page my mouse malfunctioned and this began to play. I listened while trying to fix my mouse. A minute in I put down the mouse and listened. Then I fixed my mouse and restarted this from the beginning and turned up the volume and listened through to the end. I am astonished. I don't hate this. In fact, I love this. This is one of the most masterfully performed pieces of music I have ever heard. It wasn't Ravel. That was never the problem that concert I walked out on when I was 14. It was the pianist. Not everyone can play every piece of music not even a classically trained concert pianist who graduated from Julliard. Some pieces are simply beyond mere mortals. One can enjoy a sunset without understanding how a sunset happens. One can enjoy the beauty of a rare orchard without being a botanist. Only Mother nature can cause either to happen. Or God, or whatever you want to call it. And now I realized that only some rare individuals can truly play certain pieces of music and only this gentleman can play this piece. I have saved the link for this and will try to legitimately obtain a high quality copy of this recording and I won't need any other. I have a dozen different versions of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. I have a hundred of Beethoven's Moonlight. I have enjoyed many of those some more than others and a small number far more than any others. But sometimes you get lucky and find the perfect performance of a piece and don't need to collect any more recordings by anyone else. This would be such an occasion. And my sincere apology to Ravel and sincere gratitude to the KZbin algorithm.

I think this is a Fantasy on, “Sei Mir Gegrüst”! It’s nearly identical harmonically, and the violin often plays whole lines of the melody, albeit somewhat embellished, so that I could actually sing along!

Way too slow first piece. Absurdly so. Traumes Wirren HORRIBLE fast tempo. Just awful. It's all about Richter, as always.

Not a very sound listener and am proceeding reversly in my apprehension of this work, hearing half a dozen interpretations of this Symphony that seems undertaken and understood already by everyone before the conductor that did the World premiere (have still to find the one with Dresden and of course the official recording in Moscow) but seems at first ear giving a singular experience, with the first movement sounding particularly sarcastic, like a grotesque parade. No place for hope but humour and irony. Sound and playing test very well the time apparently. Here and there, in the opening march where the brass peak in the clusters for example, I heard details unnoticed everywhere else. Thank you for the find.

While a highschooler in the mid-70s, I became acquainted with the Gilels-Szell studio collaborations. Of the five concerti, I believe that this is the one which was most successfully recorded. This live performance is even better, in my opinion. Hoomeyow!!

Oddly enough, I discovered this piece on the KZbin channel Action Figure Therapy. This Franck piece and the vulgar nature of that channel do not mix. But this adds a sense of decorum to a foul world. Thank you Franck.
