Maybe GPTK is a way of getting windows gamers over to Mac who have large game libraries. “Come to MacOS your games still work here”. I don’t think this will replace the native strategy but the more user you end up having who play games the more native games will be made.

I think Apple is in "wait & see" mode. If we make this tool better and more available which will happen first: 1. Enough games get ported to Mac that we can start collecting enough gaming revenue to press this lever harder and make a bigger investment in porting marketing and dev outreach 2. The Porting Tool Kit catches enough fire among gamers that a substantial amount of additional revenue is generated by Mac device purchases that they invest more heavily in releasing a more performant translation layer. Apple is going to do what makes Apple the most money. I don't think they know which will make them more money faster. I think if they press lever #2 it's more likely to generate more revenue for them not through device sales but instead through proving to developers there's a large segment of gamers who want to play their games on Mac who wouldn't get to play it any other way. Developers will optimize and target Macs when they believe it's in their financial interest to do so.

Apple just wants as many games running on mac as possible right now so then when a native port comes out and it runs much better they can sell the idea of just making a native mac port a consideration for most devs however they refuse to allow the use of vulkan or opengl in any real fashion forcing devs to use metal and they don't really wanna do that because metal is apple specific thus requires extra resources to implement for what is at best a small boost in sales. If they really cared about gaming on mac they'd ask devs to use metal but have updated vulkan and opengl capabilities baked into the os so that devs can still easily port pc/console games to mac without needing to know metal api.

Low supply creates high demand. The first few 5-star AAA hits that sell big on Mac (because of lower competition) will open a flood gate. That's their hope, and seems smart, but requires careful steps to get there.

That means that if they mean it seriously, Rosetta will have to live forever in some form on the Mac. No Rosetta, no GPTK, no Crossover, no games and windows apps. If they kill Rosetta like they did in case of PPC > Intel switch, that would mean end of Game porting Toolkit and thus, end of all effort.

They should just make the gaming toolkit a part of the OS so nothing is needed to be done by the user in terms of setup / tweaking etc. Just buy any game from any store and it will run. Most Apple users don't want to have to jump through hoops to make things work, they just want it to work. That's the Apple way.

It’s the yearly “this changes everything!”, “Apple SAVES gaming” or “Mac gaming is HERE” video. Just get a cheap windows laptop or a Steam Deck as a side device. After spending hours trying to make most of these games start at all and either failing or having them feel as good as a $500 windows laptop, getting a Steam Deck has been the best thing I’ve done. Trying to run windows game on a Mac is still mostly a horrible experience even with GPTK.

I think that the reason GPTK was originally presented the way it was is because Apple feels Important. They're a big deal. They hoped the developers would fall over themselves to make games. Then, it didn't happen, and it seems that they're slowly adjusting; acknowledging that if they want games on Mac, they'll have to go down the "compatibility" route much like Valve did.

Native ports are the goals because Apple can get the revenues thru selling games via AppStore. However, having a tool to "test" games that can run windows games pushes MacBook sales for those who wants to have only one computer and casually plays some windows games. A heavy gamer will not buy a Mac but a casual gamer that like Apple Ecosystem maybe will. There is one possibility: I wonder if Mac gets really good at gaming if Apple would consider to develop a proprietary emulator, some kind of game store inside the Mac, for developers publish their games as if it was a official 1-click port solution? This way apple would have the game running and the revenue of the sold game, as the publisher will expand the number of devices they can sell their games to. Kinda what Valve did with Linux if you buy it thru their store.

The biggest problem with Mac gaming is the hardware price. Mac hardware is particularly expensive and not replaceable. Gamers are definitely more willing to spend money on games and graphics cards rather than on SSDs. If it were as cheap as the Steam Deck, more players would be willing to give it a try.

Valve's way to run games not equal to Crossover/GPT Its because crossover/GPT run using Rosetta 2.. It's one more translation layer. Regarding the change in Apple's strategy - I think it is connected with the recent announcement of Copylot + PC laptops. This is the main competitor of Apple Macbook. They also use ARM architecture. To run x86 games on these laptops, similar translation layers are used - this is Microsoft's strategy. But game developers speed up the translation by recompiling shaders and otherwise optimizing the translation. I think that if Apple really intends to use such a strategy, this is the main reason

Apple should create a Proton-like translation layer that’s downloaded when a Windows game/application is run, just like how Rosetta downloads when an Intel app is ran. Then Apple could start selling Windows games in a new game centric store separate from the Mac Store. Apple can remove all the technical barriers they want, but they’ll never excite developers enough if gamers buy Windows gaming PCs by default due to the large library of games. A free Proton-like layer giving you access to a large library of games would bring gamers over way faster, which would motivate developers to start making versions of their games for Mac sooner then they will with Apple’s current strategy.
@user-dx3ts5yk5o
@user-dx3ts5yk5o 18 сағат бұрын
Proton-like translation layer its the way how to do OpenGL calls from Direct calls. Its not the way how to run x86 game on arm CPU. Steam Deck -- it's a x86 machine; Proton + Wine its the way how to run games inside Steam ecosystem without Windows and DirectX. If u want, you can run these games natively on Steam Deck -- without any translations layers using Windows. Run Windows x86 games on Mac natively, without any barriers -- it's impossible. Crossover also use Rosetta 2 to run games. Do something to avoid significant loss of game performance while u use translation layer -- is not impossible. For example, developers can precompile shaders, and use other optimizations to improve game performance while it run using translation layer. But this strategy requires time and a little effort from the developers.
@Roach22

@@user-dx3ts5yk5o A Proton-like translation layer, similar to what’s used in Game Porting Toolkit translates DirectX calls to Metal, not OpenGL. Apple dropped support for OpenGL a while ago. Rosetta is responsible to translating x86 code to Arm.

Yet another click-bait, including the thumbnail and the implications. There is no any kind of proof of that supports that claim of yours, yet, (as I am) a lot of Apple Silicon users like YOU, not using GPTK, we are literally abusing it to play games. Our devices meant to run games really, really great both in HW and SW level. Yet, we stuck between all those layers of translation tools. A simple game running and this picture includes a lot of tool; Wine to help to run Windows system calls, GPTK to DirectX (11 and 12) to Metal, Rosetta for x86 translation to Arm. If you are running a Vulkan only game, oh god. 🤦🏻‍♂ So, what I am saying is; Please fooling your viewers with this Click-Bait tricks. Return to your before self. You were literally like a channel for watching developments on the tools and technologies (gaming focused for me) by-a-minute, because you were so fast to deliver any development that is happening. @@Roach22 I was indeed replying to you. You seem to be under a common myth Apple doesn't put customers first. Well it's a tie for first between profits and customers. A fine line to walk. This is unlike Microsoft or Google or any other company in a comparable space who is definitely profit-first. As a hardware-centric company with higher production costs for much higher quality, it's a common myth that Apple is "me first" over profits because of the higher prices. Anyone with slightly better knowledge of the industry knows that "cost of ownership" indices are lower for Apple when counting in lost time, replacement cycle costs, reliability and device longevity. The REASON Apple is a multi-trillion dollar company is indeed that that "customer first" is tied-for-first position with profit. Which is hard to pull off in any publicly traded C-corp. Microsoft reached trillion-dollar status by the now infamous "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" policy. And Google by offering everything 'free' with mostly invisible unawareness of brokering your data to numerous entities and making themselves the liaison temp agency selling its customer data to others without them (mostly) knowing about it. Latest wireshark tests showing 19MB per day. I don't even know how much or what kinda data needs 19MB and we can't analyze it because it's FAR MORE walled garden than anything Apple does. Each model is interesting but I prefer to pay the money up-front for a quality long-lasting device that is customer first. And no, I don't have a Vision Pro. 🤪
