Great solution for older raised bed. What’s the chicken wire for in the cinderblock raised bed?
@UrbanGardenerDC8 сағат бұрын
Glad you asked! I forgot to mention that I direct sowed some pole beans. This garden has a lot of curious birds around so I have used chicken wire where I direct seed to deter the birds pecking and eating my seeds

Do you get to grow garlic in the community gardens? Today was harvest day for most of mine, because the rain seemed to make it all fall over early. Still not a bad harvest though, just smaller bulbs.

@UrbanGardenerDCАй бұрын
Before or after sun. Early mornings are ok, before the sun really starts to beat down on your garden. Others will say evenings at dusk so that the plants have a cool period overnight to absorb the water while not in the constant sun and stressing the plant.

Yes, but your system takes up 10 times more space than a seed tray and to grow the seedlings after sprouting you either need 10 times more grow lights or 10 times more window space for sunlight.

So with this option it allows for more variety, 10 cups can equal 10 different veggies vs. large seed trays

I think that explains why my tomatoes were such great producers last year. I added bone meal to the hole in which I planted each plant. On the other hand, I didn't do that to the soil when I transplanted my tomato seedlings into a larger pot. So, they turned yellow within two days. H'mm...I have some Cal-Mag that I diluted to 1/2 the recommended strength and will apply it with a spray bottle.

You don’t add a small rock ? I seen other people add a stone
@UrbanGardenerDC2 ай бұрын
I have seen folks place a rock in the bottom as well. I don't but I am sure it helps. I am careful not to overwater as with my method I don't want the base of the plant submerged. I fill the bottom cup about 25-30% and allow the dry soil to soak it up. I likely only add water every 10-12 days and most veggies do quite well. Heavy feeders like cucumbers and eggplant might need water a bit more often

I know peppers can suffer from blossom end rot as well. One solution I’ve seen is amending the soil with crushed bonemeal. Supposedly that will break down over the growing season and provide calcium to the plants. Do you ever amend your soil with something like that?or do you tend to prefer a quicker solution like bottom watering with the garden lime?
@UrbanGardenerDC2 ай бұрын
Actually I have experimented with both! I have never had a rot issue with peppers at my home garden but this year will be an experiment in the community garden. I do amend the soil with bonemeal for my garlic. Usually once the frigid cold has passed the galic shoots are 1-12" out of the soil I will amend with bonemeal. Good not re: peppers, I just haven't experienced that here in Zone 7
@chompers112 ай бұрын
Blossom end rot is usually a watering issue, not a lack of calcium issue

What fertilizer do you use? Do you add any to the seedlings or do you add after you put them in singles?
@UrbanGardenerDC2 ай бұрын
When I first germinate in seed trays I moisten the potting mix / peat moss and only under water in the lower tray. When I up pot them to the cups I might use 25% miracle water soluble but you have to be careful, plain water is the best at this stage. Depends on the vegetable, it can burn their roots or cause the leaves to yellow with too much fertilizer too early.
