Healthy looking Yuzu Peter. The yellowing on some leaves is probably the cold weather.

Well done on reaching that milestone Peter 🍾. I'm only around 50 away myself, i reckon that's around 6 weeks. The yuzu looks great, much greener and healthier than most of my citrus. I'm finding the 511 is ok for up to 2 years but I'm thinking citrus should probably be repotted anyway after 2 years 😁

Thanks, Louise! Yeah, my Yuzu came in a tiny pot in that terrible concrete mix citrus from Italy usually arrive in. I ended up bare-rooting and changing it to the 511 mix. It took most of last year to recover from the bare rooting. I’ve had it for just over 2 years now and it’s sized up nicely this year so hoping it might flower next year 🤞

I may experiment with the one I grafted myself onto Poncirus or a rooted cutting to see how it does in the ground here. I would still give it protection in the first few winters to help it get established. You also reminded me that I never ended up repotting my Sudachi this year, which it desperately needed lol. It looks pretty good so far Peter. Now I'm studying it closely in your video I wish you'd planted it on a raised mound like all the American growers recommend as they are extremely prone to root issues in Winter. I really hope you can keep it alive outside through winter although I admit I'm very dubious that far North, I don't think I'll risk one here. I still think its likely to be a zutano seedling 🤞.
@PeterEntwistle
@PeterEntwistle 5 күн бұрын
Thanks, Brett. It’s hard to tell on camera from above, but it is planted in a slight mound. It’s probably about 15-20cm above the ground level and then I put a load of compost around it. I think as long as I can prevent it from freezing with the lights and frost cloth it should be ok, although I think the main issue as you pointed out, might be the amount of rain, especially in my area. I believe we get about twice the annual rainfall that London gets 😬. I guess it’s a little risky but I think it’s worth experimenting especially since I have a second one🤞

Thanks, Dom. Yeah, that 'Day' avocado tree in his niece's garden was wonderful. I looked it up and it's meant to do quite well in a container or being kept compact in the ground. I think you were going to re-graft it back onto your seedling tree if I remember correctly.

Then we had a windy day and my tree was blown over because it's so top heavy .... one branch broke at the junction where it meets the main trunk, guess which branch it was? LOL. So yeah, although the graft took, however the branch was snapped from falling over. Dissapointing but these things happen. These are super beautiful!! I love how vibrant they look. The seeds right out of the fruit... what a huge difference!! I went into inga identification process 2 years ago when I bought my first... apparently, it's impossible to ID from leaf, you need at least one flower also. A leaf, a flower and a fruit, simply because there's too many of them.

Wow, those seeds have really done well. Maybe the high germination rate is due to them coming fresh from the fruit. Your seedlings look very healthy and the growth on some of them is impressive. I don't know much about this fruit but like you say in your video there are a bunch of species in the Inga genus that share the common name 'icecream bean'. Some of the fruit can be as long as a human arm. A really interesting fruit that I hope to try one day.

Just found your channel. Great interesting videos on your citrus and other plants. I grow a few citrus alongside my Nepenthes pitcher plants and other exotic plants. Over the years I have killed rather too many citrus while learning how to grow them! A bit better these days. Though my old ugli I got from Reads nursery in 2005 is getting smaller every year! Apart from resprouting several new small branches just above the grafting point. All the rest of the tree is dead and now cut back. It did produce a small but delicious fruit this year. But all the existing leaves are yellow and gradually dropping off. And the new buds which appeared in spring have not grown at all. So suspect it’s on its way out! Should have repotted it sooner but suspect it’s too late this year. My other lime, lemon and orange seem ok. And got myself a mandarin and a new ugli this summer so fingers crossed!

@@PeterEntwistle yes i suspect it’s roots have died or deteriorated. And perhaps producing a reasonable size fruit this year was the last straw! Have joined one FB group but the general advice is it’s because of lack of feeding or wrong feed. But the citrus centre feed I am using keep all the other trees happy. So roots not taking up the feed is all I am left with. Wished I had repotted it a few years back now! See if it’s still here in the spring! 🤞

Hey Sam, I've been feeding it more this year, which I think has helped it grow quite well. This is possibly why it might have dropped all the fruits. Beautiful plant you have there, Peter. Hopefully as it's now grown a bit more, any future fruitset will hold. Thanks for the update. Today I tried a fruit on my 'Bruno' variety. It had low juice, very distinct / seperate vesicles, crunchy vesicles, very low sourness, pinkish vesicles but these could change colour depending on climate temps. What's interesting is how different the taste experience is from my Faustrime, which is very sour (in a pleasant way).

I really enjoyed the sunrise lime I tried last month. @@PeterEntwistle Sunrise Lime is such an awesome and special cultivar. I'm so glad you managed to get one. Can you imagine a marmalade made with those fruits? ... Although, the fruits are pleasant enough eaten fresh so preserving them may be redundant. The plants I brought back are doing fine. It was the Bruno which suffered the worst from the journey, this was because it was enclosed in a plastic bag. It only effected the ripe fruit which was on the plant though.The plant itself is in great condition. The last 2 hybrids I think I'll get will be 'Eremorange' and 'Microcitrus papuana'. After that I'll focus on another genus. I don't mind the spikes on them. I think it gives them character. Also keeps foxes and light-fingered humans away. 😂

Thanks, Louise! I think Brown Turkey will be your best bet for getting some figs to fruit more reliably. I think I remember you had some rooted BT cuttings that Brett sent you? If you can find some space to plant one in the ground I think it will do much better and more likely to fruit. Growing them in pots seems a little bit more difficult. I wouldn't bother removing any of the fruits now, if they are too large they will just dry up and drop off over winter anyway and if they are small enough they might become next year's brebas. I only removed the main crop off my tree while the brebas were still not ripening up as I thought it might be draining energy from them, especially while the tree is still very young.
