I'm 55 and finally starting my writing career which includes starting an editorial services business providing proofreading, copyediting, and line editing services possibly to self-published authors, PhD students writing their thesis, and publishing houses. Your platform definitely sounds like a resource that could help me.

We are living in a period right now where experience counts for nothing. I've found that out the hard way. Knowledge and experience are being perceived as "expensive" & negative overall. Job jumpers, who I used to criticize all the time, appear to have the right idea. Having an active resume appears to give one an edge.

Retired after 27+ years of glorious state service with pension. Took 2+ years off to try out retirement life. Moved down South, got gastric bypass surgery & lost 40+ pounds. Now back to full time work as a civilian for a nearby Sheriff’s office. Good mix of younger kids, people my age & the work is not really difficult. They REALLY liked my resume & I feel appreciated & wanted so I’m gonna stick around a minute to try it out.

Thanks for sharing! It sounds like you've had an action-packed couple of years and have landed on the perfect "second-act" career! I'm sure your experience, knowledge and wisdom is much appreciated at the Sheriff's office! Good for you!

The fact that you glorifying this un retirement is disrespectful. Older folks are returning to work because they don’t have a choice, not because they want to. Americans can no longer live on retirement alone.
@freelancefifty2 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I fully acknowledge that many Americans face financial challenges that are impacting their retirement plans, unlike past generations. Additionally, there are those who find joy and a sense of purpose in choosing to continue to work, particularly in freelance roles. Please know that my comments were meant with the utmost respect for retirees, many of whom we've helped find rewarding freelance opportunities for years. We recognize the problem and believe we are a part of the solution!

True words. Companies: get college degreed kids willing to work 60 hrs a week so we can save on labor and py good dividends to stock holders.
@freelancefifty3 ай бұрын
True for some companies indeed. Yet, we are seeing a rapid rise in those unretiring and returning to the workforce and a sharp spike in those freelancing after 50. I think many companies see the value in having experienced, knowledgeable, battle-tested professionals on the payroll!

I know you did say that there are more than just these 4 types. One that I think would be a strong contender as a fifth type in a top 5 list is the Expat. They're not Domestic, as they have left their country of origin. They're not really Roaming Nomads, as they generally choose a home base in their new country (possibly allowing them travel opportunities, but they generally do chose a home base). They're not Seasonal, as they are living year round in their new home base. They're not just on a Workation, they have chosen to move and live in a new country (although they might have used a 'workation' to test drive the concept and/or location. So for me, type #5, The Expat Nomad, is what my husband and I aspire to! We're visitng Portugal in September, on an exploratory trip to see if would want to move/live there. Thank you for this (and other) interesting videos.
@freelancefifty4 ай бұрын
Yes, you raise a very good point. I often lump Expats into Seasonal given the Visa restrictions in some countries, but there are certainly some countries like Thailand that now allow for a longer-term digital nomad visa, so the Expat category would definitely apply there. Thanks for sharing!

@@freelancefiftyYes, we’ve immigrated to Mexico but maintain a residential address in the US. My husband and daughter are dual citizens and I’m a permanent resident. We are not nomadic either, we just live here and work there.

I can't do any right now... caring for elderly parent. but, the dream is to be able to start with the 2nd and graduate to or mix in some of the 1st. i think ultimately living in other countries for 6 months to a year at a time would be amazing.

These freelance options are great. I started a Substack in December 2022 dedicated to women navigating midlife and all the "fun" things that come with that. I also just finished a copyediting/proofreading course and received a certificate of completion and want to start an editorial services business providing copyediting, proofreading, and copywriting services. Gen X isn't taking the traditional retirement path and I'm glad I found this community to assist with freelancing over 50.
@freelancefifty7 ай бұрын
YES, Gen X will be doing more "unretirement planning" and looking at new careers and businesses to pursue later in life! I didn't mention the copyediting/proofreading path in this video, but an excellent option to consider in 2024 as well! Thanks for the note!
