Stronger winds do have advantages in a hangglider - a lot less paragliders.
@jasonreid3029Күн бұрын
I've been watching flying videos and YT graciously started recommending your channel. Wanted to do it since I was a kid (mid 40's now). Even tried building a homemade glider back in the 90's. I live in a neighboring state and will very likely be coming to Point of the Mountain to train this spring/summer. I'm torn between hang gliding (did you train with Wasatch?) and paragliding. I'm terrified of collapses, but enamored with the portability of paragliders. I love the idea of the prone flying position and rigidity of hang gliders (what I really want to do) but any flying areas where I live have very little wind. Most days less than 10mph and many less than 5mph. Not sure if a hang glider will work for me other than sled rides. Maybe catch thermals in summer sledding off the mountains into the valleys? Perhaps the Alpha 235 works okay in little to no wind? Any tips on why you chose to go Hang instead of paraglider?

@@jasonreid3029 welcome to the sickness. Yes I trained with Ted Hurley at Wasatch, he’s an excellent instructor. I started in my mid forties, there are dudes flying in their 70s and 80s, so you can do it if you take learning seriously. PG is amazingly portable but my Falcon fits nice on top of a ladder on my outback. Can’t really travel with HG like PG though. Lots of PG say we’re married to our cars, but I rarely see PG actually hiking and flying, they always take their car too. Collapses aren’t the only reason I chose HG over PG, they just don’t penetrate and have pretty poor L/D unless you get two liner spaceships that DO have collapse issues. They’re still cool and I want to learn it but not for now for me. Where are you located? People in the flatlands will usually have a club that does either aero tow or some form of winch towing, and you can get thermals from there. The Alpha is such an underrated glider, I freaking love them. They fly more like a PG, bad L/D, but so slow yet maneuverable that you can get the sink rate down. Not a XC machine but ideal for micro lift and ridge soaring in moderate conditions. The number one thing you need to do is get hooked up with a good instructor (Ted is awesome) and stick with it. Don’t do anything you’re not ready for and enjoy it, it is freaking awesome.

What no snow??? In my day boys we carried in for mile through the snow and actually flew in minus 20 Celsius for an 8 minute sleigh ride to the bottom. This is not grand dad telling you an “ in my day we walked twenty miles to school” story. I have pictures to prove it plus gliders were less than 70 pounds back then and I was also in my early twenties. Air time in the winter sustained us through the dark months even if it broke our arses getting in. Trying to break into the sites in the early spring was also a ritual usually lubricated with beer and smokables. Best sport ever and anyone that disagrees hasn’t flown yet.

Hi there😊 What's the distance/length between your normal hang-point and the A-frame's horizontal apex bolt? Is it as per the WW manual (for a 170 or 195)? And your hook-in weight please? Am trying to determine my preferred trim and limits.....Thanks 🙂
@b7gwapАй бұрын
@@andrewc3186 thanks for watching, I’ll have to measure that next time I fly. I can tell you I have two fists of clearance between my chest and the bar with the heads up all the way down. I weigh about 250 without my harness and chute which add a good 15-20 I’d guess. I could probably fly a 225 ok but instructor insists it’s better to fly the 195, more control, easier ground handling. I don’t seem to suffer from having to run too fast on launch or landing owing to the higher wing loading. That said, I kinda want to buy an Alpha 235 for light days.
@andrewc3186Ай бұрын
Hmm....given your approx. 265 hook-in, I reckon that you'd still be feeling comfortable in a 25mph-wind launch?😅
@b7gwapАй бұрын
@ yeah I’ve done it, when you fly routinely in Utah at the point of the mountain, you encounter such conditions frequently, but they are smooth, so they are easier to contend with. Normally for H2 pilots I understand that is too high. The most important thing is to find a good instructor and follow his/her guidance strictly. This short is in such conditions, I should have pulled in more and run faster: kzbin.info8c6Cpem35Sc?si=etdoLzN4T21RCEOh

I've wanted to get into hang gliding so much.. What all do you have to do to get into it? Any licensing? I'm more than confident enough to make my own despite how sketchy that sounds.
@b7gwapАй бұрын
@@OutletVibes where do you live? There are usually hang gliding schools near you wherever you might be. Licensing depends on what country you’re in. In the US, it technically isn’t licensed but you have to be a part of the USHPA to fly most sites (and have insurance.) you can totally do it, find a good instructor near you, and read up. Dennis Pagen has a great book on learning, but there is no substitute for doing it in real life. This is a sport, and like any other sport, you need to practice techniques and build muscle memory. It’s the most fun thing I’ve ever done and is much more accessible to people than most people think. Do it! If you’re going to build one, I recommend Mike Sandlin’s designs. (Freeware)
