I love how cameras have progressed since this video. I’m predominantly a handheld landscape photographer. I know that’s going to make people uncomfortable but hear me out! My A7IV has good IBIS as well as my lenses. I’m ISO invariant at 400 so I actually never shoot at ISO 100 unless I want a long exposure with water (very rare for me). I also got focus bracketing from the Sony Firmware Gods ( Sony has been stingy with giving features through firmware updates). This means, even telephoto focus stacks late in the day are possible which blows my mind. I didn’t even bring a tripod with me on my last trip. So my advice is push the ISO. If noise becomes an issue we have great de-noise tools today. We didn’t when this video was filmed. Ever since I stopped caring about my ISO, I’ve enjoyed far more photos than I used to. Love the content Josh. I will be binging these.

This was extremely helpful!! I can’t wait to photograph it. Maybe I will try my 100-400 here for something different

Incredible images. The first image was only 1 of the 3 by him that made it to the Nat Geo article (so 3 of 5 images in the article were by him). My favorite was his favorite, but that is a really special image that required a real vision of what he wanted to accomplish with very specific criteria plus remarkable technical knowledge and a bit of luck to have the weather cooperate.

Thanks for this Joshua. For years, I met my brothers from L.A. in Bridgeport, and we'd drive up to the Green Creek campground and spend a few days fishing, hiking, bull shitting, and drinking (fine wine). Good times, beautiful place!

What if you shot the sky in the same place in another shot the day before, and the next day you shot the same general scene but the sky was boring. Both shots are yours, and neither shot is AI. Would you see it as permissible, since you are the photographer on both shots, to replace the second shot's sky with the first shot's sky?

If you have something like a multiple layered portrait that has a portion that contains frequency separation, healing layers and brush layers and you turn all those layers into a smart object and continue in your editing will the volume of these smart object layers be transferred to another document thus making it possible to be able to get away with saving the image as a PSD file? Would the total volume of the image be spread across two documents?

I made the mistake of being youtube baited into buying ND/CPL hybrid filters for my drone. Now all my footage is plagued with the "polarizer bands" in the sky. Gotta spend another $100 bucks to get ND's without polarizing now.

What does it mean when a camera or lens with IBIS gives you five or six stops of stabilization? I thought a stop had to do with light.

Awesome video with some epic footage. Top work here! Two question, if you have a minute. 1) Do you have (or, will have) a video about the gear you carry on multi-day backpacking trips? 2) Do you carry a battery charger, or?

So…but what if the sky and the moon at night are very interesting, maybe combined with some clouds, how can I shoot a photo that comes the closest to the sky I see? Shoot at light…this is an idea that many of us had on their own, but is there a way to shoot the moon without the full zoom at night? Capturing clouds and the sky?

I've been trying to explain to people about how beautiful it is when the moon rises at the same time the sun sets It is epic. My most awesome full moon rise at sunset was in St Augustine in 2002. It will forever stick out in my mind. I continue to search for a setting that is as awesome as that.

Hi. Your video is very interesting and as I’m just beginning to learn how to edit Milky Way raw images I was hoping your clear and informative guide would take me through the process. However, I’ve immediately hit a snag in that Lr Classic 2024 doesn’t have an option for a profile called flat or neutral. There are lots of different options and I wondered which one would be closest to what I need?

This is GREAT! I am just wondering , since this is form 8 years ago, if your workflow has changed and if so, if there are any more recent LR workflow videos you can point to?

Love this video man! You explain things so well! I'm currently suffering from a chronic illness and rarely leave my bed. I decided to buy a decent camera because I'm limited in what I can do. My bed faces south and from my window i get fabulous views of the moon rise! There's little else i can photograph at the moment so moon shots it is! You've given some great advice here man, new sub incoming!
