I love Paul’s voice. I’m curious, did he ever sing opera pieces? I believe he had the vocal power to pull it off. I’m also curious if he had any decent high notes in his register. Not like crazy falsetto notes, just nice sustained chest notes!
@HexmeyerАй бұрын
He sang some opera arias in recital, but I don’t know if he ever sang in a fully staged opera at a major opera house. Politics, you know…
@PatrickMealeyVOАй бұрын
@ Ugh yeah. He definitely would’ve killed it in a full opera production. I’d love to hear some arias he did if you can link me. Slight tangent on the topic of opera. But the first person who performed as Joe in Show Boat, Jules Bledsoe, was one of the first black opera singers who gained regular employment on Broadway. A lot of people believe Paul originated Show Boat in the 1927 Broadway production, he didn’t. They wanted him for it but he couldn’t do it due to scheduling issues, so Jules did it instead. Paul would later originate the role in the London production a year later. Still, Ol’ Man River does feel like it’s Paul’s song through and through.

Dear Sean Coxen; Thank You Very Much indeed for this so wonderful contribution concerning my so wormly loved husband Kammersänger Prof. Günther Leib!! You may perhaps have experienced that he died nearly 97 years old in his second hometown Dresden at 05.03.2024!! I go nearly every day to his grave (when I have died - our both grave!) - together with a photo of himself and a cd-player to listen to His so wonderful singing voyce! This is my only comfort!! With best wishes for the comming Christmas and the new year 2025! Adelheid Leib

Dear Adelheid, I can’t tell you how much your comment means to me! It is so kind of you to share your love for your dearly missed husband, a truly great artist. The first time I heard his voice was as Kilian on a recording of Freischutz. It immediately made a great impression on me, and I have enjoyed all his records since. Wishing you a wonderful New Year!

As much of a jazz person that I am when it comes to this era, the Carter Family had a unique sound that no other country act had. A 78 of this came up for sale and not for an arm and a leg so I snapped it up. Sounds so awesome on my modern turntable.

The whole notion of key transposition becomes tricky when dealing with music that is centuries old. The pitches of notes were not standardized until the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, with lots of regional variation before that. On average, though, they were roughly a half-step lower than today's standardized "concert pitch." What is called a "transposition" in this video, then, may not be too far off the mark from how Mozart would have heard it.

This man was my Uncle , we lived down the street from him in Dallas on Wilbur street in the 1960's . I remember several friends of his would come and sing with him even though he was bed ridden from his car accident .

It is not a folk song in the strict sense but a early music hall song (1850s?)composed as a North- East alternative to Polly Perkins of Paddington Green which has the same tune. It is probably better known in the North East than Polly Perkins is in London these days Owen Brannigan does the song proud, as North Easterner.

Thank you for sharing this all those years ago! I was shuffling through KZbin trying to find a good recording of this piece, and this was the first one where the voice seems to fit perfectly. Most singers seem to perform this with such exaggerated vibrato that I can hear no emotion behind their voices. Novák nailed it on the head, I'd say!
