Oh my God this is so painful to watch any new safety that's replaced has to being Adjusted to the bolt for proper function. If your safety doesn't work on any mauser type bolt, you have to adjust the bolt. That means filing Stoney and polishing. Same go For if you replace a sheer Or a striker.

Ha! Now you know (from watching my other vids), I'd never destroy a truly collectible 1909 right? I have multiple other vids coming soon with restoring some that are salvageable and documenting some *mint* ones and working on an ELR one out to 2 miles and more. This ended up being one of my favorite 1909s (and I have dozens). I'm betting I'm one of the few (like you must be) in the world that appreciate and knows so much about this particular gun. Out hunting deer again with it this year and it is sooo amazing. Thanks for commenting! Any info or "constructive" criticisms very welcome!

I strapped the gun in the lead sled. Tapped the spring in place. You don't have to do any thing with the rifle and the safety lever. This is a war rifle that needs a man to handle it not a gentle person. It is meant to be always on firing position. You want the rifle idle or locked, just use the rimmed cartridge or a flat screwdriver to grab the notch at the end of the firing pin and pull it back while turning the safety lever to middle or lock position. I Hope this is helpful.

Mausers look so much better scoped in nice walnut sporter stocks. Also Timney Triggers improve them dramatically and they have some with their own safeties and also you could use a sporter safety made for low clearance scopes.

What punch are you using again? I don't want to bugger up my Grandfathers Mauser. I have been tapping with a 1/16" punch and it wont seem to budge. Any other tips to remove that pin? It is actually a 1908 Gew 98 that was refitted with the Spitzer k98 sights and the shorter barrel by the Wehrmacht during WWII.

Hmm, sorry I am not familiar with those sight ladders, but maybe you have a pin inside another cylinder of metal? I have disassembled a dozen or so 1909s and the carbines sight ladder looks like a pin but are kind of a C clamp / cylinder with a pin inside them and too large of a punch won't get the pin out. I had one that broke and I think it was because someone banged on the C clamp ring instead of the pin. Wishing ya the best and curious so let me know if you find a good solution? thanks.

What a shame. Ill trade you mine already professionally done, including scope and turned down bolt, in 30.06...yeah,its s fine deer rifle ,really nice and handy to shoot but there are plenty available and less and less unmolested milsurps every day. And let me tell you its expensive and really not worth it to try and return one back to original configuration. Forget about matching numbers and no fix for a drilled and tapped receiver for scope mounting. I bought mine already modified for a good price and its a beautiful mauser but it will never have the value of its unmolested brothers.

Oh it's far from a shame...I'm out hunting with that gun this week and will have to buy another freezer from all the nice venison! The original Boehler-Tungsten steel and fact this came from Peter Paul VonMauser's own factory and not a copycat are some reasons why this one is special. Very happy with the 7.65 original Belgian round too. And theres a larger cache I have of museum quality orig condition 1909s and other good reasons this one was selected (see my other vids dealing w preservation of them too) :-)

Dad, just curious as to why you would go to all the trouble of removing the base, just to put it back on for the scope? Had one of those 09's back in the late 90's. Really nice, accurate rifle. I removed the rear sight and base, cut 4" off the barrel, drilled and tapped, and had the bolt reshaped to clear a low mounted scope. I hunted with it for probably 5 years or so. Basically 308 ballistics. Used Norma 150gr if memory serves. I had it mounted in a black ramline stock that was popular back in those days. It was a good gun. Marine Corps veteran here. @devildogdad2 жыл бұрын
Good point thank you! I guess I did not cover that well, but discussed in one of my other teardown vids. I removed sight ladder entirely on one gun and had to replace one ladder on another damaged one so did this particular vid, but The outfit that cut the barrel down in my other vides needed it removed to do the work. I personally wanted the LER (Long Eye Relief) model scope (9.75") so wanted the base mount method. I have one drilled/tapped with about 3.75" eye relief I used hunting last year and got a lot of scope shadow and difficulty acquiring target/focus/parallax where my LER gets me acquisition quick (my son is currently Marines at 29 Palms and he doesn't like the LER so guess it came down to personal preference 🙂). I haven't gotten around to my 3rd/final video with suppressor and will note there I got 8 point buck first shot out of this gun opening day in Michigan and more meat after that so have been wildly loving this one. I use Norma 174gr now and PPU 174gr for target extreme long range shooting (see my other vids) I've had great consistency at the 840 yard outdoor range at a friends property. For that range have been able to hit gopher sized targets out to 840 over and over - truly loving these 1909s and hoping more of that 7.65x53 ammo gets produced as it is getting harder to find. I'm now researching some BSA scopes and others for another drilled/tapped method on one of them, but need lots of tube travel due to length of this receiver. Not many scopes will fit a tapped 1909 due to short tube size. (talkative s.o.b. here, but hope that answered? haha)

Yes! I do agree ate XC. I took many pains to pick out a sacrificial lamb and many a dozen got spared. But!!! the result was sooo pleasing. Check out part 3 coming soon as I took several Deer this season and absolutely love the modified version. I am an absolute fan of the 1909 Peter Paul Von Mauser overseer (overseen?) actual DWM "Mauser" and how much better it is than the thousands of variant copies. I am actually keeping a spreadsheet of inventory of the original 1909s I can trace to try to keep track of what is left in the entire world so if you have some please let me know. I am extremely interested in the Engineers carbine. I only find 13 that I can positively identify as a true model (I've taken many measures and nuisances ) and I own a few of those already so I'm hoping to compile some info and consult with Colin Webster once I collect a bit more precise items.

All original 09s have the empty bolt stop, the ramp have been filed sometimes in the past.
@devildogdad2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying Troy, but I'm finding it is the opposite. The follower ramp has to be cut down at the rear corner to allow the bolt stop. (discussed about 1:40 into the video comparing the amount of metal present in that corner) The corner cut does not appear to have been filed, but professionally and consistently cut into the metal allowing the mid section to ride higher in the receiver causing the bolt stop. Since these guns never saw action from their original contract, it seems odd that many are cut down. Most people I've known like to cycle the action so unless during wartime would seem to not want the bolt stop. I'm thinking maybe during manufacturing they just picked from mismatched buckets which is weird that their high quality control would not have caught that.
